Achluophobia- fear of darkness
Black or darkness, a mysterious color but also formal. Powerful and elegant, but frightening ever looming like death itself. Sometimes associated with evil, for it is always concealing something. Black and darkness's meaning is used to represent sin (evil) and mystery (Chillingworth and Dimmesdale's character). Like when Pearl asks about the mysterious man in the forest, which she called the "Black Man." Darkness also can be something of illusion or a mystery, like what is associated with pearl and her mystery father. lurking into the shadows and never really appearing. Darkness can be associated with Hester's power to see peoples sins. Their deep dark secrets in the darkest parts of their lives. She can see that darkness in everyone. She humbles herself from the scarlet letter and "darkness" to make herself better than all of them.
