Purpose 1: The governing body and school leaders articulate a purpose for learning

that aligns with the IB’s philosophy and mission.

If the schools mission aligns with the IBs mission this will make CAS easier to implement. Schools that do this will allocate time appropriately in the timetable, ensure the CAS coordinator has time in their schedule, and that relevant people have CAS training.

Purpose 2: The school’s pedagogical leadership team embraces educational approaches that encourage students to become active, compassionate life-long learners.

The IB encourages students to be active - this fits well with the active strand within CAS. It also talks about compassion, which relates to service. Finally it mentions that students should be life-long learners, which relates to CAS in so far as CAS encourages students to pursue learning beyond the curriculum and develop skills and passions that make them more well-rounded.

Purpose 3: The school community fosters internationally minded people who embody all attributes of the IB learner profile.

Focuses on the learner profile. CAS is a great opportunity for students to build these different qualities. For example the “reflective” element of the profile is essential for CAS, but also “Caring” “Risk Takers” and “Principled” play an important role too.
