The problem with society is that people look for temporary fulfillment as a way to have permanent fulfillment. Transcendental elements include things like Nonconformity, Importance of Nature, and Confidence, and Self Reliance. Forest has Confidence, when he served in Vietnam, and saved all his friends, risking his life, and getting wounded in the process.
