Zeus is the King of the gods, and the god of thunder. His weapon is the thunderbolt. Zeus won the crown in the fight against his father, Cronus the man who “swallowed his children as soon as they were born." (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica Paragraph 2). Zeus defeated his father with his brothers, Hades and Poseidon. After the victory, Zeus divided his brothers to control different parts of the world and continued to defeat anyone who challenged his rule. Zeus is the protector of “cities, the home, property, strangers, guests, and supplicants.” ( The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica Paragraph 3). For Zeus was the punisher and protector, his power enabled his intimidation and influence to surpass those of gods.

His Role

Role that Zeus plays comes from influential to imposing. As the god of thunder, Zeus is powerful and impacts/affects much of human population. However, he is a supporter of Odyssey. For Zeus, “promises his daughter, the goddess Athena” that he would “send Hermes to tell Calypso to release her captive Odysseus.” With that promise, Zeus continues to help Odysseus. After Odysseus blinded Poseidon’s, the sea god, son who was a cyclops named Polyphemus, Zeus uses his power as a divine god to protect Odyssey from Poseidon’s wrath. As a recurring theme, Zeus uses his influential power in order to assist in Odysseus’s journey: through commands, intimidation, and power.

Zeus continues to be a symbol of supreme power. For with his supreme power, Zeus was able to stop supreme fights that no one person, nor normal god could stop. As according to Hesiod, Zeus was a god who, “‘brought peace in place of violence’ and referred to him as the ‘lord of justice’.” An idea was that Zeus was the punisher, who kept order to Olympus and the gods who inhabited there. With his power, Zeus was capable of ending fights through either his thunderbolt or through sheer intimidation. Zeus is usually associated with, “a lightning bolt or sceptre” and “associated with bulls.” The lightning bolt Zeus symbolizes Zeus’s power and like bulls, Zeus is strong enough to go against the strongest gods.
