However, teachers may require more professional development on this strategy in order to use it effectively.
- Cheryl

UDL is helpful as the focus is the design of the whole learning environment at the outset to ensure all students have full access to everything in the classroom, regardless of their needs and abilities. Sometimes, to provide DI, teachers may simply prepare different worksheets for HA, MA, LA. UDL is a more holistic approach as it encourages more thinking/preparing before and after the lesson.
Edward

Universal Design for Learning is a general approach that focuses on making the lesson inclusive regardless of students' status and ability. I feel that in designing a lesson, we must consider the profile of our students (ability, special needs) to make the whole lesson inclusive. For example, while giving instructions for group work, it is important to have both visual (ppt slides) and audio (teacher talk) as there might be students who have difficulty following the teacher and they would refer to the slides to catch up. There may also be students who are unable to read the slides due to learning difficulties and therefore rely on the teacher's instructions.

Ms Jacqueline Woo, who suffered from a neurological movement disorder, studied at NUS. She mentioned how her university experience was enhanced by the supportive environment at NUS in terms of the following:
- transport
- alternative assessments
- extension of deadlines

The additional arrangements made for her by NUS probably reflects more of differentiated instruction, rather than a universal design for learning, since her condition is probably uncommon among students. It is admirable that her NUS professors had made the effort to make special arrangements for her, benefitting her greatly. Also, the fact that her NUS professors had the liberty to differentiate instruction for her, it does demonstrate that NUS does have some flexibility in their protocols, allowing for accommodations for special needs students. This suggests that a universal design of learning also exists in the wider NUS community.

UDL is to the designing or planning of how to make an environment inclusive to everyone before conducting a lesson. It is important to note that UDL is not the same as differentiated instruction. Teachers need to anticipate and predict what may happen in the classroom during lessons and to think of ways to make the lesson inclusive for all students. Teachers would also need to ensure that all students have equal access to materials provided in the classroom.

We use UDL to aim to create an inclusive classroom so that we can provide equal opportunities and also cater to the needs of all learners. Following the 3 principles of UDL - Expression, Representation and Engagement, we should also encourage and set time for collaboration in the classroom so that it will be one that is inclusive where students can come up with a shared vision and have opportunities to have good communication with each other. In order to incorporate a UDL in our lesson, we may consider giving our students a choice and flexibility in the way they want to do their assignment, choose from a variety of materials, vary their delivery of a presentation, and provide ample support to scaffold their progress. This way, students can actually use their strengths to make challenges more achievable and have a chance to taste success.

To create a classroom that is inclusive and provides equal opportunities for all learners, we could use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to achieve this. UDL has three principles: Expression, Representation, and Engagement. We should also promote collaboration in the classroom, which encourages students to work together towards a shared vision and communicate effectively. To incorporate UDL into our lessons, we can offer our students a range of options and flexibility in how they complete their assignments, choose from a variety of materials, and vary their presentation delivery. Additionally, we should provide support to help students make progress. By doing so, we enable students to leverage their strengths and overcome challenges, ultimately leading to success.
