The ¨Story of an Hour" begins with Louise Mallard reacting to her husband, Brently Mallard, death after a dramatic and tragic railroad accident. The person who told the sad news was Richard, a close friend of Brently, but he had to tell Louse the news with caution since Louise suffered from heart problems. Louise reacted with immediate grief, but then she heads to her room and gradually comes to the realization that she is happy that her husband has died. Though she bore no strong dislike towards her husband, the implications of his death include a new sense of freedom for Mrs. Mallard. Later, she heads back downstairs only to witness Brently coming home. Her joy turns to shock at the sight of her husband and she dies as a result of a heart attack.

¨There stood, facing the open window, a comfortable, roomy armchair. Into this she sank, pressed down by a physical exhaustion that haunted her body and seemed to reach into her soul.¨ (4)

¨He had been far from the scene of the accident, and did not even know there had been one. He stood amazed at Josephine´s piercing cry; at Richard´s quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife. When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease--of the joy that kills.¨ (23)

¨She was beginning to recognize this thing that was approaching to possess her, and she was striving to beat it back with her will--as powerless as her two white slender hands would have been. When she abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: free, free, free!¨ (10)

This quote contains two literary devices, personification, and metaphor. Personification and metaphor are used when it says ¨Physical Exhaustion that haunted her body¨. This quote is definitely giving human attributes to non-human things, this makes it be personification.

The figurative language used in the quote would be metaphor and personification because it says, ¨Thing that was approaching to possess her¨. It is using personification because it is giving non human things human attributes. The main quote also creates a metaphor by comparing two things.

The figurative language device that is being used is a paradox. The phrase ¨Of the joy that kills¨, is so ironic since, since mistakenly believe that Mrs. Mallard was happy to see her husband, and because of the great emotion she dies, but it was truly just the opposite of that.
