As we listen, we often try to connect the music with our own lives and try to relate in order to create that relationship and that sense of emotion. Finding the meaning of music is a simple as finding a specific artist that truly speaks to your soul in a way. According to Ratliff, looking at the songs of an individual artist in chronological order is considered "vertical sensibility" in contrast looking at music as a whole would be considered "horizontal sensibility".
