Although as humans we typically all listen and enjoy music, the relationship of which occurs between us and music varies from individual to individual. As we listen, we often try to connect the music with our own lives and try to relate in order to create that relationship and that sense of emotion. Finding the meaning of music is a simple as finding a specific artist that truly speaks to your soul in a way. According to Ratliff, looking at the songs of an individual artist in chronological order is considered "vertical sensibility" in contrast looking at music as a whole would be considered "horizontal sensibility". Often we encounter listening to music of which we cant relate or fully understand which takes us back to Ratliff's theories.

This song, Mr. Red, White, and Blue is a patriotic song written and played Coffey. It describes an American Soldier and how they fight for our country often laying down their lives in order to keep America free and fight for those in need. He portrays the love a soldier has for his country and how they'll "pay the ultimate price" to protect those around him and often come home missing limbs or losing their life fighting for this country. As we listen and think back to Ratliff's argument, we can only form a relationship with the song once we listen to the music.

In his song "Zombies" Fela Kuti he recollects on an attack by soldiers in his home of Lagos. He refers to these soldiers as "zombies" of which act without thought, taking orders like robots blindly. As we listen, we begin to doubt whether we understand music by just briefly listening to a song, we must listen to a series of songs in order to fully understand the music and the meaning fully making a connection.
