Television coming to Australia was halted due to WW2.  It was finally bought in in 1956 just in time for the Melbourne Olympics.<br><br>The Australian olympic team went on to give their best performance so far at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <title>June 1956 - Polio Vaccine introduced to Australia</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Polio is a disease that mainly affects children, it is not curable, highly contagious and sometimes fatal. Some people have no symptoms, or flu-like symptoms. In serious cases the virus can cause paralysis in the legs and can spread to the diaphragm stopping people from breathing meaning they have to be in an iron lung to keep them breathing.</div><div><br></div><div>The Polio vaccine was first developed by Jonas Salk, in 1955, at the University of Pitsburg. Later, Dr Albert Sabin, invented the oral vaccine, in 1961. Despite the controversy in the community determining which vaccine was better, these researchers saved an estimated 600,000 lives.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>https://www.nma.gov.au/defining-moments/defining-moments-timeline#showMoment <br><br>The Black Box Flight Recorder was created by Dr David Warren in 1954. He came up with an idea of a device that not only would record flight data, but also record voices and other sounds in an aircraft's cockpit, immediately prior to a crash. The prototype that he designed for this idea was not greeted with as much enthusiasm as it was around the world. Now, it is mandatory for all aircraft to have this device for aircraft safety. </div>]]></description>

         <title>11 December 1958 First modern Skyscraper</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The first modern skyscraper in Melbourne was called the ICI house (now Orica house). It was started in 1955 and finished in 1958 by the architectural firm Bates, Smart and McCutcheon. It was the first building of Melbourne post-war era to succeed Melbourne's strict height restrictions. In the 1910's the height restrictions for building was 40m tall, the height was determined by the height of fire ladders at the time. the restriction was put in place because of public concern for health and safety after an eight-storey building in Sydney caught fire in 1901, killing five people.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>End of the white Australia policy<br></strong>the Holt government introduced measures which were the first major steps towards ending the long-held White Australia policy. These changes to immigration policy were some of the most significant steps towards the formation of multicultural Australia.</div><div><br>Under the new laws, all potential migrants were now under the same rules and restrictions surrounding visas, and were able to become citizens of Australia after the same waiting period. People were selected based on what they might offer Australian society, rather than their race or nationality.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The countries involved in the founding of the United Nations hoped that a repeat of WWII would not occur. ‘Doc’ Evatt, the appointed Australian External Fairs Minister in 1941, played a significant role in the formation and early running of the UN. He successfully enlarged the General Assembly (the UN’s main body) and was president of it from 1948-1949. The United Nations was formed to protect the world from violence and create a peaceful environment, and generally succeeded in doing so. However, they are now considered 'irrelevant' by many, as they failed to intervene when needed in many wars.</div>]]></description>

This information emerged from US after an American dentist Frederick McKay found people living in Colorado generally had lower rates of tooth decay. Beaconsfield Tasmania was the first to add fluoride to their drinking water. After the success of water fluoridation at Beaconsfield, other regions in Australia followed.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The snowy mountains, located in NSW, are the highest part of the Great Dividing Range. The are the source of many well known rivers in Australia. Due to this source of water, the building of the hydro electric power plant begun in 1948. <br>During the war there was not much electricity and there were sometimes power shortages so the government needed to find different electrical supplies. They created the Snowy mountain Hydroelectric scheme, it is still an important source of power and irrigation water. It made Australia more independent and gave work for migrants after WW2.</div>]]></description>

People travelling overseas were given British passports.This is because at the time of Federation and until at least the Second World War, most Australians identified themselves as British. The citizenship legislation was introduced to the House of Representatives by Arthur Calwell. </div>]]></description>
