In 1956 there where less than 100,000 televisions in Australia. Television coming to Australia was halted due to WW2.  It was finally bought in in 1956 just in time for the Melbourne Olympics.

The Australian olympic team went on to give their best performance so far at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games.

Some people have no symptoms, or flu-like symptoms. In serious cases the virus can cause paralysis in the legs and can spread to the diaphragm stopping people from breathing meaning they have to be in an iron lung to keep them breathing.

The Polio vaccine was first developed by Jonas Salk, in 1955, at the University of Pitsburg. Later, Dr Albert Sabin, invented the oral vaccine, in 1961. Despite the controversy in the community determining which vaccine was better, these researchers saved an estimated 600,000 lives.

Under the new laws, all potential migrants were now under the same rules and restrictions surrounding visas, and were able to become citizens of Australia after the same waiting period. People were selected based on what they might offer Australian society, rather than their race or nationality.
