B.J. Habibie is the fourth of eight children, the pair Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie and R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. His father is an agricultural expert who comes from the Gorontalo ethnicity. while his mother is from Javanese ethnicity. He was born in Parepare, South Sulawesi, 25 June 1936. B. J. Habibie studied at Dago Christian High School. Habibie then studied mechanical engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia Bandung (now the Bandung Institute of Technology) in 1954. In 1955–1965, Habibie continued his study of aeronautical engineering, specializing in aircraft construction, at RWTH Aachen, West Germany, receiving an engineering diploma. in 1960 and a doctorate in engineering in 1965 with the title summa cum laude. Habibie had worked at Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, an airline company based in Hamburg, Germany. In 1973, he returned to Indonesia at the request of former president Soeharto. Habibie then served as Minister of State for Research and Technology from 1978 to March 1998. B. J. Habibie's breakthroughs during his tenure as Minister of Research and Technology began with his desire to implement the "Indonesian Vision". According to Habibie, Indonesia's leaps and bounds in the "Vision of Indonesia" rests on research and technology, particularly in the strategic industries managed by PT. IPTN, PINDAD, and PT. PAL. The target is that Indonesia as an agricultural country can jump directly into an industrial country with mastery of science and technology. Meanwhile, when serving as Minister of Research and Technology, Habibie was also elected as the first Chairman of the Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals Association (ICMI). Habibie was elected by acclamation to become Chairman of ICMI on December 7, 1990. The peak of Habibie's career occurred in 1998, when he was appointed President of the Republic of Indonesia (21 May 1998 - 20 October 1999), after previously serving as the 7th Vice President ( served from March 14, 1998 to May 21, 1998) in the VII Development Cabinet under President Soeharto.
