the title of this could be a metaphor for life and it's end.

to show society's views on women - the YOUNG WOMAN remains mostly silent and only has hysterical outbursts of emotion. further more the people who speak the most are all male characters - this shows the gender imbalance and the fact that it was a vary male dominant society. to further high lite this what the YOUNG WOMAN does say - she says in short sentences.

we see that society was highly religious or that the YOUNG WOMAN was/is. in keeping with the style of drama (expressionism) that this play was written in - Christianity could be changed to a different religion? - unless these are given circumstances - in witch case this play is not as acceptable to others as i first thought.

the motif of hair and ears and hands is carried on in this episode - it now has a cyclical ending. and could be linked to her religion (it is common for many women in different religions to cover their heads - this could be a twisted interpretation on that. - spirituality is one of the main factors that makes this piece expressionistic.

the priest praying
I feel that having the priest praying makes the scene a lot more intense because you can tell she is about to die but this builds up the tension to when it happens.

young woman
I feel like because now she has realised she really screwed up she is now holding onto everything she has and really regretting it. Because now she is free but then again she really isn't because she is in jail and she is trapped.

the voice of the man singing
that adds more to the scene which shows there is so much going on in the scene which makes it more intense.

when the barbers arrive she acts strong thinking nothing else can be taken from her, but when they are about to shave her head she doesn't want to because she doesn't to want to lose anymore.

In this episode you can really see how sick and tired she is of doing things for other people and she wants peace.
doing things for society and getting married (being part of the machine)
is something she didn't want to do which is why she murdered her husband and had a one night stand just so she could break free.

when she sees her mother at first she says she is a stranger and doesn't want to see her
but I think thats because she feels like she had worked for her mother and given her money and supporting her but then eventually realises her mother had been doing the same thing and realises that her mother and her daughter are the only things she has left because she lost harry after they had their one night stand and lost Mr Jones when she killed him.
I think that towards the end Helen really starts to regret a lot of things for example not paying much attention to her daughter like she should have.

when she is taken to the chair it shows that she isn't that important to other people for example the way the reporters are talking about her saying things like suppose the machine shouldn't work.

the priest is also still praying making the scene more intense.

The young woman is asking for someone for the first time (just anyone to come help her) but throughout the whole piece she is pushing people away, the ones who really care about her like her family and she only wanted Harry.
