I began attending school at the age of 3 and I loved books. I primarily spoke Spanish at home, but I still enjoyed listening to the stories in English. My teachers always read to me. I spent so much time in the reading area in school. If my teachers wanted to find me they knew where to look. I was always at the rug sitting and looking through books on my own and making up my own stories.

My first true exposure to reading (that I can remember) was when my older sister began to read. (Due to a language barrier my mother didn't read to me). I remember every night my sister would practice reading one of her books. I always looked forward to that time of the day. I sat right next to her and listened to each word she read. Sometimes she even let me pick out the books. The Dr. Seuss books were my favorite. I even memorized some of the book.

My elementary school put so much emphasize on learning to read that I wasn't interested. I would much rather have someone read to me.
When I think about reading in my early years the first thought that comes to mine is pressure. I felt so much pressure to learn to read and all I can remember is reading, reading, reading everyday.

My love for reading flourished when I was in the second grade. My second grade teacher was very supportive and patient. She knew how much I loved books and she guided me through each step of the way. With her support and guidance I began to feel more comfortable reading. I didn't feel the pressure I had before and I thank her for that. I honestly don't know if I would feel the same about reading if it wasn't for her.

SFA also contributed to my negative views about reading.
*Success for all was a reading program used at my elementary school.*

While some of my classmates would get upset when the teacher gave us book reports to do I loved them. Book reports were always an exciting time because I was able to choose the book I wanted to read. My free time is spent at the library, barnes and nobles, and thrift shops looking for children books. I love finding new books to share with the children I work.
