Thoughts:
- Julian believes that the colored woman on the bus is his mother's "black double"
- Julian experiences depression and destructive tendencies throughout the story
- The penny in the story is seen as a condescending way to broadcast the wealth most white people had compared to the colored societies during this time
Questions
- Why did Julian and his mother have such a destructive relationship?
- Why did Julian get so upset over his mom giving the boy a penny?
- Why was Julian so into his meditation tactics?
- Why does the author integrate so much racial tension into the story and how does it effect the theme?
Epiphanies
- Julian still has love for his mom, and enough to be upset over her death in the end
- The colored boy and woman from the bus depicts Julian's childhood of abuse and trauma. When his mother gets punched, the guilt of the mistreatment of Julian consumes her and she ultimately dies of guilt and remorse.
- Julian was all about teaching his mom a lesson, but in the end he was the one who was taught the lesson
