The technique was used  In April 1825 the first Thaumatrope was published by W. Phillips (in anonymous association with John Ayrton Paris) and became a very popular toy.^[24] The pictures on either side of a small cardboard disc seem to blend into one combined image when it is twirled quickly by the attached strings. This is often used as an illustration of what has often been called "persistence of vision" (scientifically better known as positive afterimages).

Limited animation is a process in the overall technique of traditional animation of creating animated cartoons that does not redraw entire frames but variably reuses common parts between frames.

History

Limited animation styles in America were used during the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s to produce a great number of inexpensive Saturday morning cartoons. Such TV series as Clutch Cargo are known for being produced on extremely low budgets, with camera tricks used in place of actual animation. Despite the low quality of the animation, the TV cartoon studios Hanna-Barbara, Jay Ward and Filmation thrived during this period. The desire of the time to emulate full animation with limited animation led to many highly apparent visual issues.

Advantages of limited animation

Limited animation has the advantage of being able to reuse frames when characters or objects aren't moving in the animation. this saves time and money, as it requires less drawing supplies and takes less time to complete the overall project

Disadvantages of limited animation

The first animator to make cutout animation as far as anyone knows was Lotte Reiniger, with “The Adventures of Prince Achmed”, in Germany, 1926.
The advantages of this technique are that that it is very low budget, needing only a camera, paper and a pair of scissors to function, and that it doesn't require too much skill to be able to edit it together

These pictures can be referred to as frames, and when displayed in rapid succession, give the illusion of movement.
Give a brief history of the technique
Claymation is an adaptation of the commonly known method as Flipbooks, where static images are drawn and played in quick succession, over time claymation movies have evolved dramatically entire movies like Wallace and Gromit were constructed using claymation techniques. Been around since early films in the early 1900's.

What are advantages of this technique
Claymation can allow for very high levels of detail to be created in characters, additionally absolutely minuscule movements can be made with the characters that is not easily replicated in modern day computer animation techniques.
What are the disadvantages of this technique
Unlike modern day animation, Claymation is very easy to 'mess up' if for example the character is knocked over or moved without a photograph being taken, the scene will need to be completely re-done. This can result in what seems to be a tiny error having dramatic consequences.

Stop animation is a type of animation that uses static images played in rapid succession in order to create the illusion of movement.
