They need to navigate this new territory and find a special object for Morgan le Fay. Morgan le Fay is a magic librarian who has been trapped! Morgan le Fay provides them with books full of information to help them on their quest. The first challenge they face is finding a way down through the forest canopy. As they navigate this new territory they must use a book called "The Rain Forest" to overcome obstacles. From big bugs, Army ants, and Vampire bats to snakes and crocodiles the siblings learn about the great Amazon. With a little help from Peanut the treehouse mouse and a curious monkey the siblings are able to find the special item, a mango. The rain forest is in three layers. Thick treetops, often over 150 feet in the air, make up the top layer. This is called the forest canopy. Below the canopy is the understory, then the forest floor. Jack and Annie almost stepped out of the treehouse onto the canopy and could have fallen far down had they not read about the Amazon before jumping out.
2. In the rain forest, many living creatures blend in with their surroundings. This is called camouflage.
3. The Amazon River stretches over 4,000 miles from the mountains of Peru, across Brazil, to the Atlantic Ocean.
4. The Jaguar is the biggest predator in the Western Hemisphere. Jack and Annie were saved from a jaguar attack by a quick thinking monkey!
5. This topic is a great way to introduce students to some vocabulary like predator, species, and canopy that can help students understand the world they live in. This book is great to peak students interest in studying the mysterious Amazon and what plant life an animals can be found there. I had no idea these bugs traveled in such numbers. These ants can scare away even the toughest of predators. As they march through the forest it is easy to hear from the sheer numbers of them. I also had no idea that the Amazon river basin contains more than half of the rain forests in the world. Lastly, I learned all about the different levels of the rain forest such as a canopy, understory, and forest floor.
