1: Helps normalize expectation that everyone tries their best everyday. When a student can’t answer a question, we should allow students for more think time and say things like “take a little more time to think about it and i’ll wait.”

2: Call and response. Teacher gives answer and student repeats the same answer.

3: Another student gives an answer and the first student (who was unsure of the answer) repeats the answer.

4: Teacher provides clue which helps student find the answer

5: Another student gives a clue to the student who is unsure of the answer which helps the initial student answer

This helps increase student participation and change their attitude from i can’t to i will. It will also help them answer correctly and/or (simply) answer most of the time!

No opt out offers a number of engagement solutions for the teacher to maintain student engagement. These include a call and response beginning with the teacher. Another option is for a student to provide a cue that can be used by another student to respond to the question. A third option is for the student to provide the answer and have another student repeat the answer. Another alternative could be that the teacher provides a clue to the student. It is important that the teacher direct the discussion to ensure clarity for each student.

Natasha
