I think the tree house in the beginning of the story represent's time and how you grow over time just like a tree grow's. and a tree can grow in up, down, left or right just like time can go left, right, up or down. Evidence - "He pointed to the diagram of the cube..." and "That's three dimensions..." I found both of these on page 94. I chose this evidence because when Gilbert was talking in the tree house he was explaining to Emmy how much he hates time and i think it is a reference.

I believe the train tracks would be a good symbol because like many of you said you can go forward but not back and there is so much space to the sides and opportunities on the sides but you can only go in a straight line.
