Jane keeps all of her checkers in the back row to keep herself protected

Page 31:

Jane is keeping all of her kings in the back row, meaning that her kings are all protected. This symbolises Holden’s feelings, and that he is keeping all of his feelings in “the back row.” Although Holden often acts on gut instinct, his feelings on sadness and and on friendship are often repressed, similar to the kings in checkers.

Jamison: Represents Jane. It is foreshadowing the future (oooOOOOOoooh the FUTURE)

Page 11: “The game of life”

Holden is playing his “life” game carelessly, because he feels like he’s on the wrong side of the board. Jane, however, is taking a different approach, keeping all of her kings protected, not knowing what side she’s on anyway.

Jamison: Life, is a game boy.

" You'd have liked him. He was two years younger than I was, but he was about fifty times as intelligent."pg. 43 Allie was a deep thinker and wrote poems, and he was the kindest of the family. That is the opposite of Holden's reaction to his death. The reactions shows that Holden was very close to Allie. Holden tore up the paper because he was offended that Stradlater didn't understand something so important to Holden. People can be both hard and soft like a mitt, but they are all made of the same substance, and they can make themselves stand out, just like the poems written on the glove. Holden's relationship with Allie was good, but Holden has trouble connecting with other people, so when Stradlater rejects him and the paper, he is angry.

"I pulled the peak of my hunting hat around to the front all of the sudden, for a change. I was getting sort of nervous, all of the sudden." (p.39)
I put my pajamas and bathrobe and my old hunting hat, and started writing the composition." (p.43 )
He bought the hat from New York. People wear hunting hats to stay warm. When Holden writes, he will wear his hat. He always wears his hat forwards when he is nervous. The hat symbolizes uniqueness and individuality. The color of the hat is same color of his brother’s and sister’s hair.
