One of many aspects of design that has really interests me is architectural design. I love the symmetry that buildings can bring and the beauty behind that. That feeling you get when you walk down a street which just makes you in awe. Architectural design allows you to be fully surrounded and immersed by a design.

The image attached is of a street in Bath, Somerset. I love the Georgian eta of design, which Bath have a lot of. I love the symmetry and simplicity of it. It can be simple but extremely effective and there’s a sense of elegance and quality behind the simple look.

Giorgia Lupi designed a series of expansive data visualizations just over 10 years ago for the Sunday supplement of the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

They are inviting, intriguing, and beckon you to find a different story in the data each time you look at them. The graphic above was the first that I saw, each visualization in the series tells a different set of stories.

I found out recently that her design work was done only using Illustrator and Excel--that is incredibly inspiring! She also worked on a year-long project (Dear Data) with Stefani Posavec from our readings.

The pop-art era of design is one that I have always enjoyed, the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein in particular. If you can make someone pause and take a second look at what you have presented then you have succeeded. The attached image of a Lithograph by Andy Warhol is one of my favorites and one I have in my home today.

I resonate with the use of color, repeating images, and non-typical layout for the poem. This inspires me to look for and work toward a non-standard style in my design work to inspire the next era of designers. I believe anything that causes a reaction from the audience, be it positive or negative, can be considered a successful piece as it will stick in their minds.

I remember one day I saw a poster of one of Ernst Haeckel's "Art forms from the sea" in a street window. And I stopped for a second and I thought "Wow that's beautiful". After I did some research I found out that he was a scientist but at the same time an artist. He liked to study single-celled organisms and other forms of life with his microscope.

Of course, they are not fully scientific as he adds some aesthetic flavor to them. For me it's interesting to see why we think these images are beautiful, and there is this idea in psychology that humans are always wanting to perceive something that is orderly and shows a certain regularity.

The founders of Post Typography draws a lot of water in our little city of Baltimore--in my eyes. They both graduated from MICA and have done some really amazing projects. I love the Waverly W really is a great sculpture in person, it's beside a Saturday morning farmers market and library branch. The Parkway Theatre branding work is incredible to walk through, the space felt so right—unfortunately it closed or, Baltimore is too small to support a second art house theater through the pandemic, especially with a more established theatre a block away.

Researching this post I see that they merged with Topos Graphics, but the founders Nolan Strals and Bruce Willens are still busy locally. Looking at their work it’s kind of embarrassing seeing how many restaurants and beers they’ve branded that I’ve frequented. The Union Collective wall is highly visible from a nearby highway, and was such a surprise when it arrived. I enjoyed a few World Cup games there. It looks isolated, but is only a short walk from a few neighborhoods. (Here's an interview with the founders.)

But it wasn't until later when I was back home that I saw the funny connection between our first brief's topic and the word "Post" (aka our Blog post) it has in the title's magazine :)

My design work of choice is actually a packing and product design I came across while cleaning out my wallet. The product I found is a really popular chewy sweet in Germany and the packaging has not changed, in probably, the last 50 years. The sweet is quite cheap and known as a “Pfennigbonbon” which makes it the perfect thing to hand out during carnivals, parades or festivities.

As I said the design hasn't changed in forever and is quite simple. A colored piece of paper with a metallic overlay depicting the flavor with an icon and a simple typo stating the flavor. Even the producers state that the tried to change the design but always failed. So it has looked the same since my mother was small.

To me a product which has been around for more than 50 years with the same packaging and design as it had when it was launched and is still sold is quite extraordinary and noteworthy. And this continuity makes it so special and important to be, because it not only reminds me, but also my mother of her childhood and receiving them form the cashier at the checkout or collecting them during a parade.

Digging a little deeper into "How did we get here," I wanted to delve into the history of typography and I found this video.

A perfect mix of entertainment (complex editing, touch of humor) and a beautiful popularization of the history of typography.

What struck me the most was the impact that Steve Jobs had on all of this. I also didn't realize that the ability to choose fonts on computers was so recent. Fascinating to put this into perspective for me!

All throughout my undergraduate course you hear of the famed AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Artists), my professors held it to such high an esteem that the feeling was passed down in all that we did. When I found this video discussing her being an AIGA Medalist, I wanted to share it with the class.

I immediately connected to this information about Sister Mary Corita not only as a practicing Catholic, but as a lover of pop-art which I mentioned in my last post. After hearing of her in the lecture, I found myself needing to consume as much info about this woman as I could.

The post is bit long, so I recommend reading the Kenya Hara quotes if you're pressed for time, they are the core of the inspiration. Does this idea connect with you? The last two paragraphs discuss how it would be viewed, do you agree with my take? Any other comments or ideas are welcome!

It discussed how there are three ways that viewers react to certain experiences and how they are triggered.

I found it really interesting on how we can use design to make our viewers feel a certain way to portray a message we are trying to put forward.

By Charlotte :) for some reason it says anonymous. In Film & TV design it is crucial to build, organize, and protect your library. I've never considered that before, I kinda flit from project to project and depend on memory to find items.
