'C' - Consistent Application

During this part of the HACK cycle, students will become more familiar with personalizing their projects using any technology that is familiar to them, which is the consistent application of the HACK model. Students should be the ones that are choosing what they create and teachers should become more like a mentor in this situation. That is how you know that the 'C' attribute is being completed correctly.

'K' - Knowledge Centered

The 'K' part of the HACK cycle refers to the fact that students are able to learn new information independently of the other students. During this phase, students also will be able to solve real-world problems based on what they know from their individualized learning. During this phase, the teacher becomes the facilitator of their learning and the student really becomes the sole owner of the knowledge that they are gaining in the classroom. At this point, Project-Based Learning becomes vitally important in the classroom.

What shifts do students need to make in the 'C' and 'K' phases and how will I support those shifts?

Students will need to learn how to apply those platforms that they learned in the 'A' phase before 'C'. I will support this change by showing them examples of what I consider to be good and bad use of the platforms that they already know how to use. Students will also need to learn how to think outside of the box with their use of technology in order to start solving real-world problems. This will take place during the shift from the 'C' to 'K' phases. I will support this change by walking them through their first Project-Based Learning project and creating one alongside them. I believe that if they start to understand how to to engage with all the information available to them, they will get better at using that knowledge to solve problems on their own.

What does ‘C’ and ‘K’ instruction look like in the classroom?

'C' and 'K' learning look very similar in the classroom although there are two different methods that I would use for each of these attributes. For 'C', it would be best to use Inquiry-Based learning because it is important during this stage that the students are creating their own questions about the world and things that happen in it. During this time, they are able to practice using technology to integrate their new information into a final project. This is a building block for moving to the 'K' stage. During the 'K' stage, students will be engaging in Project-Based Learning to investigate and solve a real-world problem based on what they already know. This stage will occur over the longest amount of time to allow students to develop their problem-solving skills in a way that makes sense to them.
