Amy Tan had an extremely difficult childhood, and I think that is even an extreme understatement. She grew up in Shanghai, China where she experienced her traumatic childhood. She also had experience with certain mental issues, such as seizures, and hallucinations because of the seizures. This gives her a lot of very unique and interesting stories and books. Growing up in Shanghai also gives her a different culture to write about that often isn't written about or even shown. This all combines for Amy Tan to be a fantastic multicultural writer.

While working on her memoir, Tan realized that some of her mom and dads' expectations were based on a false premise, a test that, according to her parents, indicated she had a very high IQ. "I had a feeling that I wasn't really that smart, that the test had made a mistake. And yet there was this expectation," she said. "So I grew feeling that I was a fraud."
