Throughout high school I never utilized services or sought out resources to further my educational development. While being at Young Harris and taking First Year Foundations, I have taken advantage to do these things. During high school I did not see a need to go out and seek extra assistance to improve my grades, I just slid by and did not study. The first week of college was a wake up call to the academic difference and difficulty compared to high school. With this wake up call and help from First Year Foundations I was able to take ownership of my education and seek out a resource to organize my school work and time.

Another way I have decided to use the resources provided by Young Harris, was using my free time to utilize the services at rhetorica. This source was brought to my attention by my English teacher. She provided an incentive on one paper that if we went to rhetorica and revised three things about our paper she would add points onto the final copy. After doing this I received a better grade on my paper, so since that experience I have taken the rest of my papers to rhetorica in order to maximize my development across all my classes.

From age four to now I played soccer my whole life. I would devote all my time and effort into training's and games. After deciding not to pursue soccer in college I found myself doing less activities in general. I did not realize this until college because all summer I traveled and hung out with friends. Once I came to college I found myself barely leaving my room and only hanging out with my roommate; this was extremely different then what I was doing in high school. With soccer being my main outlet to make friends it was hard to adjust here, especially into a new environment. I was seeing a decline on my personal development after my first few weeks here. I decide to take control of this aspect of my life to improve it and make college more enjoyable.

After reading Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw from Covey’s book, I decided to balance myself to create a healthier lifestyle. Covey talks about balancing yourself in four aspects, since I was lacking in some of those I chose to improve two of them in hope of a happier lifestyle. This inspired my to seek out more friends, rather staying in my room all day with my roommate. By attending sports events as much as I could, I felt a sense of community being established around me. It tended to be the same group of people going to these sporting events, so I began hanging out with them. This improved my overall emotions and attitude towards college.

So with my social and emotional personal development improving, I decided to improve my spiritual personal development. My roommate, Nicki Williams, helped with this aspect by pushing me to go to chapel with her. This caused self-reflection on my decisions, because I put God on hold for worldly things since I have been in college.

Luckily, my professor started off the first lesson with learning about fixed mindsets and how to move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. With this being the first lesson I was able to open up to the idea of the class and what it had to offer to improve my college experience, personally and professionally. This also helped with personal relationships by opening up to other personalities to broaden my friend circle; this leads to listening to other ideas and opinions to not be fixed on your own.

First Year Foundations also gave me a dispositions rubric, this rubric displayed different characteristics and how to change your behaviors in them. I found this rubric to be meaningful and purposeful in all of my classes. For example, the dispositions rubric has an attribute about preparedness and participation. It discusses attending class and building on one another’s ideas. This came into to play in my English 1101 class; my teacher had a system where if you miss four class meetings she will drop you out of the class. Personally, I believe this is a great rule to implement, because class time is valuable and imperative to ones learning experience. If students did not have mandatory attendance they would be missing valuable class time to enhance their education and would not have the opportunity to hear their peers thoughts that may inspire them.
