It's about an orphan who is adopted  by an elderly brother and sister, and brought to live in the town of Avonlea.
Throughout the novel, Anne ages into a young adult. She learns many lessons along the way after getting into many scrapes- about controlling her temper, to cure her vanity, about forgiveness and she transforms into a dreamy and scatterbrained child into a mature and grounded (but still dreamy!) young woman. 
I love this book because I relate to Anne in so many ways with her love of books, writing and daydreaming; and it's heartwarming to watch her find a family and be loved for the first time that she can remember. It shows a boy struggling with trauma and depression. He makes wonderful friends who fit outside the "Sociably accepted group". He grows through his ups and downs with them. It follows a range of students at a high school, who have been given weekend detention. Needless to say, chaos ensues as there is no active supervision!

Whilst there is no central protagonist, I like that it focuses on students from different backgrounds and 'cliques' within the school. After this attack the movie shows Bethany's recovery of how she is so persistent to just try and get back in the water and prepare for the national surfing competition.
