Im aiming for my track to be in the genre of pop/indie rock with a tempo around the 100-120 mark. My initial influence for the sound of my track going into this is Paramore with the mood being pretty upbeat but with some darker sounds to add some grit. Instrumentation wise I don't have anything certain in mind but definitely some strong guitar sounds layered with some light pads hopefully?

I achieved what I set out to do in the sense of tempo, instruments but I think my influence changed from Paramore as it doesn't sound too much like a Paramore song. My influence changed as I included instruments that felt right for the track rather than "what Paramore would do". I learned how to layer sounds and also pan them so that there's room for each instrument. I think the keys and guitars worked well in the track as they contrast each other quite nicely. In the future I would potentially try make my track a bit more complex and have my bridge tie in with the rest of the song a bit better.

I was worried that I would go up and forget what I was going to say due to nerves but that didn't happen. I was confident about my given topic and being able to talk about it thoroughly as it is a relatively simple thing to explain. I think my whole group did well on explaining their topic well and clearly and you could tell everyone did their bit on the presentation. I think I could have prepared what I was going to saw a bit better to avoid rambling and to talk to clearly and directly. Next time I would practice what I wanted to say more times to avoid forgetting my lines and trying to make up for it.

One thing I was a little worried about prior the performance was forgetting my parts as we had a few issues with band members wanting to swap parts last minute or stepping back in to performance after agreeing not to and therefore had to spilt songs to accommodate everyone. I was confident about the sound of our band as in previous rehearsals we had sounded good and if there was a part we didn't like, we went back and worked on it. I think the way we transition into songs without loads of space or talking in-between went well. I think maybe having more confidence could have made the performance better as nerves could be holding our voices back. Next time I would really focus on the parts that were slightly off or I wasn't happy with to avoid things like singing the wrong note or just my overall opinion of my performance.

I want the instrumental to start off pretty mellow and match on what's happening in the scene as the girl is flying through the air. But then, tension starts to build as someone else enters the scene and starts chasing the girl and whilst this is happening the song starts to get more intense and creating suspense as the audience don't know what is going to happen next. Instrumentation wise I would want it to sound dreamy and air at the start so most likely going to include some older vintage sounding synths and potentially some strings and in the more intense section have heavier stuff like military drums.

I think I achieved everything I mentioned in my first initial idea. It started off mellow and light and turned heavier and more suspenseful as the tension built in the clip. I struggled to find dialogue for both characters speaking so maybe in the future these can be recorded manually and options were limited on Live Loops and BBC Sound Effects.

For any FX/sound effects throughout the clip I plan to use ones from Logic Live Loops, Pixabay and BBC sound effects. Where I can't find anything suitable or I don't particularly like, I will then go in and record it myself. I don't necessarily plan on adding any dialogue into this as I don't think it needs it and still understandable without any words. The atmosphere/vibe I want for this is more serious/realistic as I think that's what's most appropriate and would make most sense. I'm going to be using some music but more as a background music element to fill more of the space and build tension/suspense at certain parts.

Working with: Maya, Ava, Katie, Antos

We started off by getting a drum loop on logic to get a sort of vibe and to give us ideas for the song. Once we listened over and over Ava starting playing some chords on the guitar and then Katie started following along on bass and coming up with stuff that complimented the guitar. After that we sat and listened for a while whilst me and Maya sat and tried to hum along a melody. Once we had a rough idea of a melody, we recorded a melody pass so we wouldn't forget it. Once that was done, we sat and tried to come up with lyrics, which came somewhat easy once we got the first line, it just started flowing afterwards and then we recorded it into logic so we had it all down. I think its sounding pretty good so far and has good potential to be something good.

I think overall I stuck to my initial idea as much as I possibly could. I didn't record any sounds as I claimed I would try but it definitely would have made it more unique. A downside of not recording my own sounds is that it was very difficult to find sounds that sounded realistic or lined up with scenes but regardless I think it worked out pretty well.

I used very minimal background music but I definitely think it adds impact where needed. Overall I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out, in the future I think I would try to really go all out by recording my own sounds, really nitpicking at sounds to make it as realistic as possible by using things like EQ, reverb and compressor a lot more intentionally.

I was worried about my overall sound before the performance as I had just been struggling a little bit with sounding flat at certain parts of songs and I wasn't feeling overly confident about rooster as that kinda song is typically out of my comfort zone and I think I didn't sound the best I could've for my part either.

I was feeling confident about our general sound as a band as I think the way we've structured and arranged our covers and our voices to blend together has been a strong point for us particularly.

During the performance, again I think the way we sounded was very pleasing to hear back and to see our work pay off, and the way our original song went as well considering, it's a new song meaning it wasn't fully engraved into our heads the way the covers were so it would have been easy to mess up.

I think our stage presence could have definitely been much much better as there was little to no movement at all from us compared to other bands. Granted, if some of our songs weren't that upbeat to move too, there definitely still was opportunities to do so.

Next time I would definitely focus on putting in little bits of extra work whenever I can to make sure I'm feeling pleased with the way I sound with my given parts and that I have a solid foundation so that the day of my performance I'm feeling less anxious and stiff therefore, also allowing me to let loose and move on stage more.

Overall, I believe I did the best I could with the limited tools that I had but it still felt like something was missing and the track wasn't anywhere near finished, for example the vocals still felt too quiet compared to the rest of the track, the horns and guitar felt too loud and overpowering, even after adjusting. But this did teach to me maximise all my tools before just jumping to plug ins or effects to try solve an issue that might clash later down the line. It also reminded me how much I enjoy panning stuff and making space for every single sound almost like making space for each piece of furniture in a room.

I think after adding compression to the vocals, it definitely brought it up to par with the rest of the track and made the volume of the vocals more consistent and not have such a major contrast. Also adding compression to the horns and electric guitars definitely calmed them down too as I think they are the loudest parts of the track, especially the horns as there's 4 of them so that made them feel more balanced and again, have less contrast volume wise.

For my solo performance i’m going to be singing l’amour de ma vie by Billie Eilish. For my accompaniment I got oilibhear for play guitar for me which was an intentional choice over a backing track.

For my research, I listened to the song multiple times and also watched live performances and different ones to see what she did at which parts and how she sang it.

The technical challenges for me with this song was keeping my tone light and airy but also balanced and the song is quite jumpy in the way of how the notes move and it’s quite acrobat like. Also the range was a big thing for me and it’s quite low to get comfortable, especially performing infront of an audience.

Me and Oilibhear did about 3 rehearsals total, the first rehearsal we focused more on Oilibhear getting the guitar down and making sure he knew his bits and then once he got it we ran through it a few times to make sure it was set in stone. In the second rehearsal we noticed we were playing it a bit faster than the original so we made sure to fix that and just tried to get solid full run throughs down. I also noticed but pitch was off at certain parts so I made sure to work on that at home and In our third rehearsal, we made sure everything was clean and tight and we also practiced playing standing up as that’s how we were going to do it in the final performance.

Once EQ was added on top of the volume, panning and compression, the track is slow starting to come together and sound more polished. EQ made the vocals sound less scratchy and more clean and also getting rid of the unwanted frequencies made more space for the rest of the sound and instrumentation within the track. I also decided to add some EQ onto the electric guitars just to round out the sound and make it sound more punchy which I think I achieved well without making it too overpowering.

After evaluating our performance, we decided to cut "Rooster" and "Aint it fun" from the setlist as after much discussion, we realised wasn't really our vibe. Nonetheless we got to picking songs over the marking week and started throwing out a bunch of ideas and see which ones stuck and ones everyone was on board with. We ended up landing with, "Super Freak" - Rick James, "She looks so perfect" - 5 seconds of summer, "Back on 74" - Jungle, "Give it up" - Victorious.

We've kept "Aint it fun" as a very last resort back up as we've got a solid foundation on that song and incase one of our songs don't end up working out for whatever reason.

We agreed to learn the picked songs over the marking week so we had an advantage once we returned. Once we got in the practice room we decided to play "Super freak" and "She's so perfect". With "Super Freak" I think its going really well as there's loads of space for instrumentation and for our guitarists, considering we have 4 so there's space for everyone and everyone seems to be enjoying playing it as its a funky track. When we started playing this song, we also made a "no mic stand" rule so that we can get some movement from the vocalists especially with a song like super freak. Jason also decided to bring in his talk box for this song which I think gives us an advantage and adds some variety into the instrumentation and overall just a fun element. Afterwards we had a go at running "She's so perfect", overall I think its a fun song and another high energy and just a crowd pleaser which we all agreed on is important to have in our setlist for our performance to get the crowd going. Nico managed to come up with harmonies for the repeating "Hey" in the song and it was sounding quite good off the bat and it all got us excited, but that being said we still need to figure out harmonies for the rest of the song. For next rehearsal we talked about taking the key up a few semitones just to suit Nico's voice a bit better as her voice does live in the higher register, especially in the verses of the song which are quite low.

We started off rehearsal with "She's so perfect" as a warm up and to remember our ideas from last week and also just working on the harmonies as I had some trouble keeping my note as its kind of an awkward note, especially whilst everyone is singing and playing its a little hard to hear. But we plan on splitting up the parts so that we can start working on our own individual sections, same with "Super Freak". We changed the key and raised it 2 semitones I believe? which is a bit of a challenge for me but I was willing to do it to better suit Nico and to also challenge my range aswell. We also came up with the idea of transitioning the two songs as "Super Freak" has the build up of the "Hey" and "She's so perfect" starts with the hey's so we thought this would be a clean transition between the two. We also briefly tried working on give it up but as there's so drum sheet music or bass tabs available, we had a hard time therefore, we connected to the soundboard via Bluetooth and played it out loud to try play along with. Me and Maya mainly tried to figure out the harmonies in the song and it's a duet song. We got a little bit down but not a lot, whilst Nico tried to find a section to place herself in.
