The School of Athens represents all the greatest mathematicians, philosophers and scientists from classical antiquity gathered together sharing their ideas and learning from each other. These figures all lived at different times, but here they are gathered together under one roof.

One of the most famous renditions is the wooden sculpture by Italian Renaissance artist Donatello, created around 1440. This life-sized sculpture depicts Mary Magdalene with an emaciated figure and long, unkempt hair, conveying her remorse and suffering. Donatello's portrayal of Mary Magdalene was a departure from traditional depictions, which typically showed her as a beautiful young woman.

Virgin Mary cradling Jesus Christ after he has been taken down from the cross. pieta means pity. Some representations of the Pietà include John the Apostle, Mary Magdalene, and sometimes other figures on either side of the Virgin, but the great majority show only Mary and her Son.
