This question is difficult to answer right now, perhaps the reason I am perusing this degree. It feels as though technology has come at us fast and furious in education and that we need to take a little pause and ensure we are offering the proper forms of technology that will be meaningful during instruction and student learning. My guess is that technology will be mandatory in a full form of curriculum (not just supplemented or an elective) to ensure student and teachers are prepared for our digital world.

This will help prepare the students for post secondary education and for the work force. It would be a shame to move that way fully; however, it should be at least an introduction to what their education options are in the future.

The classroom isn’t the only place people learn. 360° cameras are quite accessible and affordable these days, and that modern-day oral tradition, the YouTube tutorial, has very much taken to them. The immersion and sense of presence added by the new technology makes them more effective than ever before.
AR, VR, and MR offer new opportunities to create a psychological sense of immersive presence in an environment that feels real enough to be viewed, experienced, explored, and manipulated which would otherwise be impossible or difficult in the physical sense. These technologies have the potential to offer new possibilities of learning by giving everyone access to immersive experiences that were once restricted to relatively few learners.

Some trades schools are experimenting with this model and in my opinion we will see more and more schools adopting this.

The next big technology isn’t the most innovative idea, however it is a groundbreaking in its influence. In the Padlet Activity #1 I spoke about the Alberta wide Electronic Medical Record (EMR). Currently, individual clinics and practices are using different EMR systems based on cost, convenience, preference etc. Primary Care Networks (groups of specialty care practices, family practices, and walk-in clinics) have formed and have begun using the same EMR systems. This is a step in the right direction however, does not address the problem that many of these system cannot communicate to each other. Therefore, if you go to a walk-in clinic and get put on a new medication, your family doctor will be left uninformed. This puts the responsibility on the patient to inform his/her doctor, which may be difficult if the patient cannot speak or is unconscious. The latest technological innovation in the health care industry in Alberta is the development of a universal EMR system. It’s not incredibly new and innovative, yet being able to implement a new EMR system in every clinic and hospital across the province is no small undertaking and has been in plans for years.

Currently, our nursing program has a simulation centre with mannequins that react like a real human. Professors have mentioned that some hospitals have implemented AI technology, thus we will have to do some catching up

Many online modules in the health sector come out as the research is completed unless there is an emergency. Shortly after the popularization of Fentanyl hit there was a severe need for Naloxone Kits and Naloxone training. Very quickly we had to connect with the subject matter experts and develop in-person classes as well as online modules. Outside of these emergency situations and the researched areas we develop education modules on access to care and continuity which helps ensure that patients get appointments when they need them, shorten wait times, and allow for consistent care from professionals who know your personal health background.

Online Delivery and Online Collaboration

In my sector, I think the next big move for learning and education will be changing from traditional type of delivery, physically in class, into online delivery. When I taught at high school, teachers have started to use social network or smartphone apps to engage students more in learning. Such social network platform or Youtube Channel have also become the virtual classroom for teachers to design and deliver their materials to students.

When I worked as teaching assistant in distant learning courses at the university in Taiwan, many courses are now available for blended delivery. Despite the fact that there's still limitation of technology and tools we used, the feedbacks and reviews were positive and constructive for distant learning courses, making more and more fully-online or blended delivery courses available for students. The way instructors prepare their teaching materials will also change accordingly.

On the other hand, another big move is the collaboration platform. It's common that students are using those collaboration platforms such as google docs and slides to work on their group projects. However, for now this is mostly still among students in same class or same school. One important breakthrough will be more and more cross-departments or cross-schools courses, projects and competitions available for students to experience.

In my sector, high school education, the next big technology will be interactive digital learning platform such as moodle for students to learn without the geographic and time constraints. The digitalized school education will also create more motivation and interaction for student to learn. So far some teachers have tried to design more visualized and engaging learning materials for students such as videos or animation of Western or ancient Chinese history as well as English learning materials.

I have seen a trend in post-secondary to try to include more online technology that helps to allow for more blended learning. I think in our college we are much more likely to see more technologies that allow for better virtual group work. With the limitations of our current LMS systems I believe that better technology will be introduced to make up for what they are currently lacking.

I think that to go along with my other answer that the next big move in learning and education is likely a move to more blended online education. Along with this blended model that allows less in class work I believe there will be a focus on micro credentialing and more direct focused learning. By this, I believe that education will be looking at the outcomes and determining how each of these outcomes could contribute to more specialized learning.

In The Hospitality Sector

MALAT Timeline Padlet Activity 2

1. In the hospitality sector what do you see as the next “big” technology in the next two years? (Please include your name)

To keep up with the market demands in the hospitality sector, guests no longer require simple space, a place to lay their heads down when travelling. Today’s guest demand and have a need for technology, as well as, hotel and resort operations, relying directly on IT’s expertise. Service automation replaces the human interaction providing remote check-in/out and simply order room service from their device. The benefits of this technology, it frees staff up in order to complete other duties as required.

Some of today's guest prefer to use their mobile device to access their room, which is replacing the guest room door key. This simple app is evolving and providing added security and a history of whom is coming and going at specific timelines. Guest accusing staff taking missing travel essentials provides a history who entered the room. At times it highlights the guest was the only one coming and going from their room. They simply forgot items at home, assuming items were taken from trustworthy associates.

I see a need for virtual training for the service sector. Servicing guests in a five-star resort is achieved through many years of experience, and continuous service training. Creating a virtual five-star training program allows the associates to learn from their mistakes through the virtual training and not in front of their paying guest. It is all about exceeding the guest expectations. This allows for consistency in standards being met, and this creates buy-in from guests, and stronger relationships are developed. Advancing technology assists in a property to become the market leader of choice.

Just my thoughts, Rachelle Williams

I feel the hospitality industry is moving towards an online and digital learning platform. Designed for all types of learners. This will not replace the traditional face-to-face service training. To anticipate a guest need, to trained through the verbal and mostly non-verbal. Face to face training embraces the emotional intelligence in refining one's knowledge, skills and abilities. Self-directed learning can be designed for those associates working through a rigid succession plan, meeting weekly, monthly and annual training expectations.

Just my thoughts, Rachelle Williams
