Hello everyone! My name is Guillermo Avalos. I am a sophomore here at CSU Stanislaus. I am majoring in Agriculture and I plan to use my degree to teach Agriculture. I own a harvesting business and I harvest for people with Almond orchards. I also farm about 80 acres in almonds all based out of Livingston, California. I love sports like baseball and football. Attending sporting events with friends and family is something I enjoy doing in my free time. I also love sports cars and going out for drives to get coffees from all over California.

When I think of Sustainability, I like to think of Earth. I think of the different types of things people can do to help live a healthier lifestyle to get and maintain the planet. I think that it has to do with being as efficient as possible when it comes to using energy and making use of all the clean energy sources like wind mills, hydro power, solar energy. However, the types of energy is just scratching the surface, there are already a lot of things we can all do as individuals to help become more sustainable like recycling as it is better for our planet because we are not abusing resources and making the planet suffer when it is unnecessary. I practice this in my life by making sure that I do little things that add up like recycling all my plastic water bottles and any cans that I may use. I also make small habits like making sure to turn the water faucet off while I'm brushing my teeth and just making sure I'm not using water unnecessarily. I also make huge practices when watering in my almond orchards. I try to be as efficient as possible with my water usage for trees. I try to only water at night with the process of drip irrigation as most of the water goes directly to the root of the almond trees and by doing so at night, almost no water evaporates or goes to waste.

When I think of information literacy I think of being able to use the information you have and using other sources of information as clearly and efficiently as possible. I think it is very important to research topics and learn as much as possible on things that can really make a difference in the world. For example, I think that the California water situation is a great topic to look into as there are many different view points that people can have on how we use our water. It is very important to know what's going on with all of our water in order to make decisions on how we use this valuable resource today and how we will continue to distribute and use it in the future.

I would like to learn more about what we can all do to live more sustainable lifestyles. I would also love to learn about some of the things that we are already doing today and how we've implemented more of it into our lives. When it comes to information literacy, I would like to learn about how we can do better when it comes to researching certain topics and implementing the information into our lives as well.

Hello everyone, for my topic, I would love to talk about the water situation in California and the effects it has on food production and cost. This effects many people but this would be focused on how it mainly effects the crops here in California, producers and consumers. Of the three pillars, this topic would fall under the environmental pillar.

Throughout the years, the water situation has definitely had its ups and downs. However, recently there have been a lot more downs. The drought in California has lasted for many years now and I believe we are starting to really see that now not only from a producer point of view, but as a consumer as well as the prices on many products in our grocery stores have now sky rocketed in price.

This topic is very important because these are products that people consume on a day to day basis. California is responsible for producing many products for the country to consume and people like you and I are being effected today. The water situation is extremely important because if it worsens, we could potentially see a decline in farmers wanted to farm and a shortage of products causing an increase in price.

This topic is very important to me as I am an almond farmer as well as own a business that revolves around farmers and agriculture here in California. They wouldn't survive if there was not enough water for farmers. If California's water situation continues to worsen, people like myself could potentially lose everything.

I hope to learn that there are better ways to be more sustainable when it comes to using water. I want to research what we can do to get more water from places that may even have an abundance of water that aquifers/storages can no longer hold.

Everyone is Tired of Being Silent

Hello everyone, I have chosen to do my rhetorical analysis on the article, "Everyone is Tired of Being Silent." This is a very powerful and eye opening article that was published recently covering the working environments for farm workers. Interviews covered in detail employees from a nut packing facility in the Central Valley here in California.

I believe that this article was written with the purpose of informing people of what things are occurring here in the Central Valley. I think that the audience is primarily for the people here in the Central Valley because to relates very closely to many people including myself. I found this to be very disturbing because I live here in the central valley and agriculture is a huge part of my life. The author definitely uses Pathos in the article as they want to appeal to our emotions because it can very well be happening to us and the author does a great job at this by including a very specific case and interviews from people who have been mistreated and being yelled at by their boss stating, "does this job mean anything to you? then take down the videos" that were out there as proof to others that the plant couldn't keep their promises of creating and upholding a safe work environment.

The author did a good job in organizing the article as well. It was structured in a way that makes sense for the reader to follow along. The author begins by giving some background in what the person does and what problems they face in their working environment. They then bring in the factors that make it difficult to make these changes like not having the proper positions/rights to make a stand for themselves, dealing with employers who will fire them instantly and replace them. The author then goes into what the workers can do and has been done for example, the petitions and marches lead by Cesar Chavez. Then the article moves into what some people can do but doesn't focus on this part because it was not the point of the article but rather just an idea and an example to say that there are things already in place to show consumers where their products come from, why can't we do the same to show how the working conditions look like for the people who are in the process of their produce. The author makes sure to include a quote from one of the workers that states, " It doesn't matter if I get fired..yelled at.. it won't make me silence my voice." This is a very strong way to end this article as it will stay in the minds of the audience that it is okay to stand up for themselves and others as if they have already gone through some of the things these people around them have in order to make the changes necessary for equality and safety in the work place for all.

This work is all apart of a continuing conversation because what has happened in this article is to raise awareness too and for people who may feel they don't have a voice. This is a problem that cannot be solved immediately. Using history as an example of how long it could be to make changes, it could be generations later to create the changes that workers in this field are looking for. However, this is one of the steps necessary to move forward in creating change and that informing and educating the public or what is occurring in these facilities here in the Central Valley and most likely happening in other places as well. Furthermore, the information is likely to be very valuable as it is taken first hand from the workers who actually experience these things on a day to day basis with evidence.

I used a couple strategies for reading this article. I pre read parts of the article so I could get an idea of where it was going and what I could use. I also annotated and created notes to research words if I wasn't familiar with them. I was also using rhetorical analysis throughout the reading to look for why the author may be using information the way they did.

All of the strategies above helped but I think one of the most useful things for me is being able to pre read. This allows me to tie things together when I'm reading the entire article in depth and it gives me a better understanding as I go through.

I do not have any questions at this time.

My narrative is that the drought in California is causing a negative impact on consumers.

The counter narrative is that the drought is actually causing a positive impact for consumers. An example of this would be that there are now more desirable climates for produce that require less water like strawberries.

The counter narrative can help solve a problem. This counter narrative can lead to more research in acclimating foods to grow in a more dry climate that will require even less water to grow the same amounts of food. It can also help in conducting research for different watering methods to become more efficient with the water that we do have available to us now and moving forward.

The genre I chose was a eulogy. The audience for a eulogy is normally family and friends.

Thank you everyone for being here today. As many of you may know me, I am Karen Zandarski's brother Guillermo. Nothing was more important to her than her family and friends so it means a lot for you all to be here in remembering her life. We are very thankful for all of the loving messages and words of encouragement during this difficult time. Karen was someone you could always count on during your time of need. Karen was a special soul who always knew how to communicate well with others and pushed everyone to be their best. I will always remember the time when I was in elementary school and didn't have any friends and she allowed me to go sit with her at the big kids table. This made me one of the popular kids in my grade and that's the kind of person Karen was. She was always looking out for other people and was an excellent role model for others and made a significant impact on my life from such a young age. I was very lucky to have had Karen in my life for so many years and have gotten to know such a beautiful person. Her amazing sense of humor and intelligence will forever live on in our memories and we have all gained an amazing Angel to look over us all and in guiding us through our journeys. Once again, thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart for coming together in remembering my sister Karen and may her soul continue to live on in our memories.
