It always feels nice when your efforts are recognized. Of course that's not why we do what we do - to get recognition - but when it is, it inspires us to keep going.

The subject was not the focus

Although most students mentioned the subjects or content area nobody mentioned academic success as the main reason for the teacher's impact. The focus was on their personal growth and the impact made on their lives beyond the subject.

We do not need a lot of recognition to restore faith. Often the fruit of our labour is only visible after students have left. When we see the failures more immediately than the successes, it is easy to doubt ourselves.

Lasting impact

What resonates with me most from the video is the lasting impact that we have on our students. You could tell from the video that some of the students were from past years, and we always need to remind ourselves that what we say and do (even if it may seem small at the time) is something that student could remember for the rest of their lives.

The same goes for our students - they have a lasting impact on us as well!

It is always the sign of a good teacher when you see the positive effect they have on their students. These connections allow both students and teachers to be better at what they do and who they are.

To build relationships! Feel connected! To learn about being human. Support each other. Change the world for the better.

This is the best part of teaching. It's kind of hard to watch this sort of reaffirmation of a past connection without getting emotional. Every time I've heard from a former student to talk about what they remember or what they got from our time together, it's been the highlight of my week or month.

This made me cry. I got something like this from my students and I was so touched. Whatever we say can stay with students- good or bad. We need to remember we have a big role to be able to change students life.

It is the realisation that it is the lasting impact that we have on students, and how they develop as people and how our actions and interactions impact journey through school and beyond.

- great to get thanks - FIS usually kids say "thanks" at the end of lessons.
- When you are teaching we can't see our impact, but we know it is being made
- connecting outside of the classroom is as powerful as inside the classroom
- the overarching theme was caring, and the development and the process
- teachers agree that it's not a smooth, linear process and that they doubt themselves too
- teachers can impact students without really noticing it
- sometimes students don't know how much you appreciate them; usually happens at PSTC but the student doesn't know it before hand
- classes that you see build growing relationships; small school helps to build relationships because you see them so often and in different situations; longevity of a relationship to build the relationship
- not a singular relationship; everything is interconnected
- see the "other" side of students outside of class and in other subjects
- that is why opportunities for outside of curricular experiences with students is important - to see them in a different way

Reaching out to students and making those personal connections creates a lasting impact in their lives. Whether in or out of the classroom, having the awareness that each small gesture or action has a ripple effect, is powerful.
