Netiquette is the acceptable way to communicate on the Internet. It is a set of rules that you should follow to be safe and secure on the Internet. It is important to know that posts are permanent on the Internet so it is crucial to make sure you think about what you put out there. It helps to make sure that people are being kind and polite to others on the Internet. Practicing netiquette can help people reduce the amount of mistakes that can be made online. With the rise in technology, Netiquette is becoming more and more important in everyone’s lives such as teachers and students. Technology has become an essential part of education in the classroom so it is extremely important for kids to be informed about it. Teachers need to educate students about netiquette because they are responsible for preparing children for the real world and future.

Netiquette #1 The person on the other end of a digital communication can't see your expression or hear your tone of voice.

This netiquette is about how people cannot tell your feelings through digital communication. Talking to someone in person and being able to hear their voice is very different then talking to someone in cyberspace. It is extremely difficult to know exactly what the other person is actually trying to say when you can’t actually hear how they are saying it. For example, if someone is trying to express that they are excited about something, they could type in all caps, but the reader can easily infer that they are mad or screaming.
I chose this because I have had many experiences in my life where this common miscommunication has occurred. Social media such a prominent part of our lives and we don't realize the impact our words have on other people because we cant see their expression or faces. A rule that you should follow is that if you wouldn't say it in person you shouldn't say it online.

By being mindful of the way you word your messages, you can identify potential confusions before sending messages. It can be helpful to read things out loud before you send it. It is important to know this rule because it can save a lot of unintentional arguments or problems with peers.

Netiquette #2 Remember the Human

The golden rule, “treat others the way you would want to be treated”, also applies to the Internet. When talking to others, it is important to picture how you would feel if you were on the other person's side of the screen. Stand up for yourself, but try not to hurt people's feelings.

I chose this because most of them would never act rudely towards anyone else in person, but when put behind a digital device more people seem to think it is acceptable. In my past experiences, I have seen a whole different side to people when they are not in face-to-face contact. People are willing to say more when they are hiding behind a machine but kids need to be enforced that regardless if its in person or not, we should still treat everyone with respect.

When you communicate electronically, all you see is a computer screen. This makes it a lot easier to forget that the person you’re talking to has feelings and emotions. It's a lot simpler to type mean things but we need to remember that the golden rule applies online as well and no one would want to read any negative thing about them. When you communicate through cyberspace words are stored somewhere where you have no control over them. It is hard to say they will ever be completely deleted, so it is the better option to learn to not say mean things in the first place.

To teach students to remember the “Golden Rule” while communicating online, I would create a handout that has a list of “comments” someone could leave on a person’s profile. Some comments would be deemed appropriate and inappropriate. I would have the students go through the lists and decide which they think are good and bad comments. This will help teach students the correct way to be mature and nice to people on the Internet.

To teach students how to use correct grammar via the Internet while speaking to a superior, I would ask them to write a text message to a friend and an email to a teacher both asking for help. Then I would ask them to write a brief paragraph explaining the differences between how they communicate with a friend versus a superior. By doing this, they will become aware of the differences in how they speak to people and how to distinguish between the two.

Using proper ethics is extremely important when communicating over the Internet. Often people think that because they are using the Internet, they don't need to follow the same manners they would in real life. If you come across an ethical dilemma on the Internet, it is important to follow the moral rules you would normally.

Students need to be taught about acting morally and having values in a non face-to-face setting. Students need to understand the importance of acting morally even when they aren’t seeing the person they are talking to. There has been many instances where people talk to people online and think they are talking to someone that they really aren’t. Kids need to be aware that they cannot give out personal information to strangers on the Internet.

Young children can often be tricked into believing certain things that they read or are told by others over the Internet. By teaching them how to act appropriately while using the Internet, they will also be able to recognize signs of others acting immorally.

While it is easier to use slag while communicating online, it is important to remember that proper grammar is necessary in school. When you’re communicating with a superior, you must double-check your work before submitting it.

Often students become accustomed to writing using the slang they use while texting casually with friends. It is not wrong to use shortcuts while texting but students must learn when it is appropriate and when it is not.

If students don't know how to appropriately communicate with superiors it can be detrimental to their future. By teaching them to not use shortcuts when contacting people and to revise their emails, they will be able to be independent and effective adults.
