Norway has hosted the winter games twice once in Oslo in 1952 and another in Lillehammer in 1994. Norway has won more medals in the winter games then any other athlete in another country. Norway also has an amazing record in track and field, notably in long-distance running events. Above all skiing is the central identity of Norway. Norway first introduced skiing competitions in the 18th century. It started off for their soldiers but it grew to nonmilitary skiing events at Tromso in 1843. The annual Holmenkollen Ski Festival is the world’s oldest (1892), attracting tens of thousands of people.

The Norwegian Language belongs to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic language group. The Norwegian alphabet has three more letters than the Latin alphabet. Until about 1850 there was only one written language, called Riksmal, also known as “Official Language,” which was influenced by Danish. Landsmal, or “Country Language,” was then created out of the rural dialects. After a long feud they decided upon Bokmal (book language) which is used in many schools there today
