"Summary of Big Girl Small"

The book that I am reviewing today is called Big Girl Small. It is about a 16-year-old girl named Judy Lohden. Judy goes to a performing arts high school called Darcy Arts Academy. But there is something special about her. She is three feet and nine inches tall. She calls herself a “little person”. As the book begins, Judy starts telling us about how she is starting eleventh grade at a new school. She meets Kyle, and instantly he becomes her crush. Then she meets “goth Sarah” and Molly. They become her closest friends. They’re inseparable. Judy has mixed feelings about the school. She starts to realize how different it is from her middle school, in positive and negative ways. But after a bit of time and a few parties, a rumor about her starts going around. The rumor results in her distancing herself from everyone, including her friends and family, in Motel Manor, a vacant motel in her town.

My Personal Review

Ultimately, I liked this book. When I first started reading it. I thought that I wouldn’t but I actually did. I thought that it was going to be just another one of those cliche high school books about a girl who falls in love but it’s not. As soon as I found out that she was different, I started having more of an open mind and opinion towards it. I liked that the author was very detailed about the feelings that Judy had towards everything. I think that the author choosing to write this in first-person point of view was a very good decision. What I didn’t like was that she ended up detached from everyone. I think that fundamentally, she had a good support system. But I think that that’s just me. I like when books have good endings and everything is perfect. But I know that every narrative has to have a conflict.

The most interesting part of the story was the parts when Judy talked about Kyle. I don’t know why but it was really interesting to see someone talk about their crush. Judy is really open (to the readers) about the fact that she likes Kyle. She talks about him so genuinely and like she’s in-love. I also think that the setting was interesting. The time period stayed the same but her surroundings actually changed frequently. But not to a point where it was hard to understand. I think the setting change honestly made it a more interesting book overall. Again, the conflict kind of upsetted me but it was pleasant to see what happened in the end.

This is the cover that is on my copy. I think this symbolizes her little body and how light it is and how easy it is to make her sad and distant. I think that it also symbolizes the conflict and the fact that she is moving herself away from the problems and people of her life.

Some Interesting Quotes

“When people make you feel small, it means they shrink you down to close to nothing, diminish you, make you feel like s***.” Pg. 1

This quote stuck out to me because it honestly surprised me. It was the first quote of the book and made the book stand out a little bit more to me.“She could do a staggeringly accurate imitation of someone’s way of moving, or dance across the room so lightly it looked like she was levitating or flying---but when she reached for things, there was a high risk of her dropping or shattering them.” Pg. 95
This quote stood out to me because of its format and it’s overall tone. It was like it transitioned so drastically. It went from positive to negative in a quick second. And I don’t say this in a bad way. I think that this is a very unique and different way of transitioning.

“Most people are stupid as hell when it comes to things like which words are rude. And a lot of people, even once they find out which words hurt people, still like to use them.” Pg. 5
This quote stood out to me because I actually agree with it. I’ve seen it before.

My Recommendations

If I were to recommend this to someone, or a certain group of people, I would recommend this to readers who love or like “chick-lits”, romance, and coming-of-age novels. Also related genres like realistic-fiction, suspense, and more. I think that this novel really emphasizes the coming-of-age genre because of the story she is telling and the problems she is having in school. Of course, this can happen to any person in the world but this usually happens to teenagers in high school. And I say that from personal experience.

If there were anyone that I wouldn’t recommend this book to, it would be the readers that like intense fantasy, crime fiction, or anything similar. Naturally, some people can unexpectedly like another genre that they may think that they won’t (and once again, I can say that from personal experience) but some people are stubborn. However, I encourage everyone to try new things.

Song Connections

A lot of people seem to think that since we are young, we have nothing to worry about and in my opinion, it’s a really bad stereotype. I can’t say that I’ve been depressed about the difficulties of high school but I’ve seen it. This relates to the book because it emphasizes the idea of teenagers being despondent about the everyday components of high school.
