This book communicates the importance of family and is a bit more of a challenging read that should take some time to complete. There are tones of hard work, charity and human connection throughout the book all paired with minimal images. This will encourage her to build the scene more in her head, rather than rely on images alone to build a scene. Girls With Guts tells the story of women who have fought for equal rights by being the first of their kind (as well as breaking some rules) in sports and other athletic events. It features a young boy who fishes with his father. As Erlinda had mentioned she also loves to fish with her dad this may connect with her on a more personal level than others. As her father is also from Mexico, maybe this book will inspire her to ask questions about her fathers home and what life was like while they are out fishing. Fishing with family is a wonderful experience. One where you can build memorable dialogue and connection through experience and storytelling. This is well reflected in this book and hopefully will provide for powerful reflections in her life as well.

In most social studies classes there are very few women who are brought up as key players but this book seeks to set one name firmly in the minds of young readers. The goal is for Erlinda to find connection in a strong willed, courageous and confident main character while also learning about the beginnings of the place she calls home. This book was named #1 at the 2020 IPPY awards.
