  • It is common to live with extended family members. 
  • Some of the family members may include Lolo't lola (Grandparents), Tiya (Aunt), Tiyuhin (Uncle), Pamangkin (Niece & Nephew), Kapatid (Brother), Ate (Sister), & Asawa (Spouse).
  • Filippino(a)s are very family oriented as they highly esteem and value a tight knit family.
  • Everyone has a role within the household, the oldest sibling typically cares and is over their younger siblings. 


~Values & Beliefs in Family Culture:
  • Paggalang (Respect), Pakikisama (Helping Others), Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude), Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya (Prioritizing Family), Hiya (Shame), Unity, Joy, Adaptability, Reverence for Religion, Diligence/Hard Work, Hospitality, Family-Oriented, Gratitude, & Loyalty. 

~Cultural Norms in the Family & Family Interactions
  • Paggalang (Respect): is expressed to elders when greeting or leaving them by kissing their hands. The younger family members can express this towards their elder siblings by addressing them by Kuya (older brother) or Ate (Older Sister). Filipinos utilize the words "po," "opo," and "ho" when addressing or communicating with elders or authoritative figures as a form of respect.
  • Pakikisama (Helping Others): is generally expressed to remain in good graces with others, since they tend to desire to be likable and accepted. This can be expressed with anyone, whether they are friends, co-workers, relatives, strangers, or bosses. 
  • Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude): They believe that it is their responsibility to  always express gratitude. The younger family members can assist, serve, and give back to their elders by acting upon utang n loob.
  • Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya (Prioritizing Family): They believe in esteeming family and prioritizing them due to being family-oriented. Family is among the top priorities in an individual's life. Parents would even take jobs abroad or unfavorable ones just to provide for their family and even make sacrifices.
  • Hiya (Shame): This allows one to be able to conduct themselves in a way that would be pleasing to their family's name. This positively influences good behavior within families and society. It promotes obedience and reverence to their parents, older siblings, and authorities.

  • It is the man's duty to make the first move and ask a woman out. (Importance on courting.)
  • First dates and followup dates are vital. (They take relationships seriously.)
  • The man should lead the relationship role. (Planing and paying for the dates, be a gentleman.)
  • Family approval is vital. (This could make a break a relationship, since they are very family-oriented and value their elder's opinion.)
  • Religion/Spirituality is vital. (The family prefers that their significant other share the same beliefs.)
  • Longevity in relationships is common. (They date to marry and usually invest in long term relationships.
  • They lay out a spread of food when meeting the significant other.
  • They believe and emphasize celibacy.
