In the chaos of the government collapsing, clans and sub clans claimed ownership to different regions. They have declared the independent states of Puntland in the northeast, Galmugdug in the center, Somaliand to the north, and Southwestern Somalia in the south. The UN and the US tried to make peace but plans fell through in 1944. in 2004-2006 Islamist militias took over much of Somalia, and other countries were drawn into the conflict such as Eritrea and Ethiopia. Based off the claim that the leaders were terrorists, the US came back into the equation in 2007 and launched air strikes.
