Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Skopje and died in 1997. She spent her life working in Calcutta India. Mother Teresa worked for 20 years teaching in St Mary’s high school in Calcutta and whilst she was teaching in Calcutta she was taking trains to take part in spiritual exercises. In 1948 pope Pious XII granted Mother Teresa permission to leave her position in the high school and begin her work with the poor and hungry of Calcutta.[1]

[1] Mother Teresa, Author unknown, http://www.marypages.com/Theresa.htm, published in 2001, accessed on 29th of March 2017 [2] Mother Teresa, Author unknown, http://biography.yourdictionary.com/mother-teresa, published 2010, accessed on 29th of March 2017

Mother Teresa is the founder of the Missionaries of Charity and in the year 1950, her group was given the official status of a religious community. She began her work with this group by getting unschooled children from the slums of Calcutta and teaching them. This later expanded to the missionaries of charity opening up to nine elementary schools in the city of Calcutta. Mother Teresa also worked with the sick and dying, which is something that her group is widely known for. Mother Teresa also opened up her mission in other countries and by the year 1979 her group had over 200 operations in over 25 countries in the world. [2]

Mother Teresa is a truly radical change agent because of her kind nature, open mindedness, her willingness to help others and have others join and help her; unlike a close minded, arrogant and unwilling radical extremist. Mother Teresa’s work in the community of Calcutta and having others help her in her work, with the formation of the Missionaries of Charity specifically, shows that she was adamant on others joining her group and helping those less fortunate than most. Compared to a radical extremist would have been very much set on doing things by themselves and not letting others help.

Her open-mindedness and willingness to help others is what makes her a truly radical change agent, along with her work in Calcutta and with the poor. Her kind nature is the complete opposite to a radical extremist, who are usually arrogant and not kind. Mother Teresa now has a large following of people who are just as willing as herself, for this too happen it is apparent that Mother Teresa would have to be a truly radical change agent because otherwise she wouldn't want others to help her and she wouldn't want other people to follow in her footsteps of being kind and helping those less fortunate then themselves.

Throughout her work in Calcutta Mother Teresa has encouraged many people to follow in her footsteps. From other people’s view she has always had an open mind. Her outlook on life was to help others, it was to help the hungry and the poor. This encouraged an open minded approach to situations rather than a closed minded one fro others because it showed people that a little kindness and open mindedness to the world can go a long way. It can cause many good things to happen, whereas being close minded and guarded towards the world can cause bad things.

Mother Teresa, though only a small woman, would take risks for others in many big ways. She put herself around the sick and unwell to help them and care for them, she would carry the wounded or the weak to get help and she would care for children that were too little to care for themselves. She was extraordinary in the work that she did and she would never dream of putting others wellbeing in risk. She was always helping other people and putting their wellbeing before her own.[4]

[4] Mother Teresa, Libby Laux, https://www.learningtogive.org, Published date unknown, accessed on 4th of April 2017

Mother Teresa has worked for the transforming of a situation rather than the controlling of it through her work in general. In her area of work there is no way to predict what will happen and how it will go. Therefore, making her very able to work with the transformation of a situation rather than controlling it. Her work wasn't controlling in any way. Her work is similar to that of a doctor or paramedic in the sense that each day will be different, she wouldn't live the same day twice.

In an interview with time magazine in 1989, Mother Teresa said,
“Time: When you spoke at Harvard University a few years ago, you said abortion was a great evil and people booed. What did you think when people booed you?
Mother Teresa: I offered it to our Lord. It's all for Him, no? I let Him say what He wants.
Time: But these people who booed you would say that they also only want the best for women? Mother Teresa: That may be. But we must tell the truth.
Time: And that is? Mother Teresa: We have no right to kill. Thou shalt not kill, a commandment of God. And still should we kill the helpless one, the little one? You see we get so excited because people are throwing bombs and so many are being killed. For the grown ups, there is so much excitement in the world. But that little one in the womb, not even a sound? He cannot even escape. That child is the poorest of the poor.”[5]

[5] Mother Teresa interview with Time magazine, Edward W.

This quote from the interview shows that even though she was a saint, there were still people who disagreed with her and her values and beliefs about the Christian faith. So much so as to boo her at a lecture she was giving. There is always the chance of offending people in any line of work and that is exactly what happened to Mother Teresa. This could have cost her some of her followers, however she was a carer for all and therefore this probably did not affect her hugely.

What inspired me about Mother Teresa

The thing that I personally found the most inspiring with researching Mother Teresa is her kind nature and willingness to do anything to help others. It can be hard sometimes to think that there were or are good people in the world with all of the wars and fighting going on. However, Mother Teresa showed me that there were and are good people in the world. Her work is still continued today through the Missionaries of charity. This is something that really inspired me, the fact that even though Mother Teresa died 20 years ago her work and her kindness still prevails through the group that she started. Her willingness to do anything for anyone is also something that inspired me greatly, she was always willing to do things for other people and never asked for anything in return. That is something very rare in this day and age and not very well know in her day and age either. This challenged my own worldview because I was able to see that there is still good in the world. I was able to see that not everyone are radical extremists. There are still truly radical people out there and before researching Mother Teresa that was hard to believe.
