Egli disse che scrisse questi versi in dialetto per alcuni romagnoli che incontrò li nel campo e che ogni sera gli chiedevano di recitare qualcosa in dialetto. Gli recitava I sonetti romagnoli di Olindo Guerrini, che egli conosceva a memoria, per distrarli dall'angoscia e dalla nostalgia di casa. Iniziò poi a scrivere poesie inventate da lui, che poi una volta uscito dal campo nel 1946, le fece leggere a Carlo Bo.  
Le poesie contenute nel I scarabòcc sono 7, uscite nel 1967, ebbero un grande successo.
