I chose to create my own Epic library for the Final Inquiry Project. I thought this would be very valuable to me in the future having a set of books that I have already looked at and discovered while on Epic. Since Epic is a free tool, this will be a great resource in my classroom. I found books with a variety of information, from historical fiction, science, math, human body, and more. I am not sure if linking my library would work, so I am attaching a link to a google drive that has screenshots of my library and the books I saved.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1NQ_sqVUSMBV2529a2G2Y8TazI9UU1853?usp=sharing

Document with explanations of why I chose these books.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Rs80JpZWapthXbyLKYkrr6b9EKOkv4CxPmSP20pNmB0/edit?usp=sharing

Especially when we have a growing number of students who walk out of conflict into our classrooms, it is important that our classroom be safe while also avoiding being ignorant and/or insensitive. On a smaller scale, war and conflict literature teach students to think for themselves and critically about their assumptions, fears, or those belonging to others.

I first started a Slides, then quickly realized I wouldn't be able to say what I wanted to with quality. I also wanted to be able to include my descriptions and analysis of the different stories along with meeting the assignment objective. So, I created a new Padlet (linked above) just for this genre and then wrote a short paper (linked above) outlining the evaluation and use of this genre in the classroom. Sorry about all of the reading involved in this project!

For this assignment, I designed a lesson plan focusing on why its important to be themselves. This lesson plan has multiple activities related to the book, as well as the students themselves. I love this book, and I think it sends an amazing message to students who feel "different" or as if they dont belong. It shows students the true beauty of being themselves. I plan on using the activities listed in this lesson plan in my future classroom.

We decided to create an Epic library with books that we feel would benefit our future classrooms. We both have used Epic previously and love how easy it is to navigate and access a wide variety of books. We decided to choose five categories that range from many topics that will be present in elementary school conversations. The categories we chose are: friendship, educational, holidays, environment, and fairytales. The books we chose range from ages 5-10 and are appropriate for a variety of conversations that the books can open up in the classroom. Linked below is a google doc that includes links to each of the Epic book libraries on each of the topics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_jTAUjSc1tUijp7nflxvGeFZzjxK-9p6QBdUmnX_MTo/edit?usp=sharing

I chose to do an illustrator study on Leo Lionni. My lesson is aimed towards Kindergarten students and really allows them to explore their own creativity. In this lesson we begin by introducing the author and illustrator Leo Lionni. Then, I do a read aloud of one of his books, "A Color of His Own," and let the students know that after reading they will get to become illustrators themselves.

For my personal inquiry project I chose to create different libraries on Epic for my future classroom. Because I do not know what grade(s) I will be teaching I chose to include books for various ages in each seperate collection. These colections range from education to fun and silly so that I have a variety. I chose to make collections about animals, artists, friendship, activists, mythical creatures, being at a new school, weather, math, and a collection of books that are in Spanish. I wanted to make different collections on books that I am familiar with so that I could get a head start on having this resource for future students of mine.

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499819/friendship?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499820/all-about-animals?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499836/artists?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499840/making-a-change?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499872/mythical?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499881/new-school?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499886/weather?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499888/spanish?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33499901/math?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=57750999880

I chose to create an Epic Library for this project. I think this will be something that will be very helpful to have as a resource in my future classroom. And starting to add books now will be beneficial in the next couple years when I start to teach, I will already have a head start on some great ideas for books to have in my classroom. I chose books that all had good lessons or that would be entertaining to my future students. In the future I also plan on building my library and creating different sections of genres and interests. But for now, I have provided a link to my google drive where I screen shotted the first few books I have added to my Epic Library. I chose Save Me a Seat because it shows two individuals who struggle to fit in from different reasons (one is an immigrant with culture shock and the other has auditory processing disorder). And over the course of 5 days, they become friends and get through their loneliness together. It is a great story to teach children how to be kind to one another because we are all different and how everyone can find a friend. Suee and the Shadow is an entertaining mystery novel that also shows students that everyone can be friends as the three main characters are Suee, who is a bit antisocial and likes being by herself, a popular boy, and a shy and bullied girl. I chose The Magic School Bus Lost in the Solar System because it is an entertaining and informative book for students to learn more about our solar system and has fun illustrations. I chose El Deafo because it was a great book we read as a class and it shows the struggles of a young girl who loses her hearing and goes through times of loneliness and feeling left out but she imagines herself as a superhero called El Deafo and realizes that her disability does not define her. I chose Ivy and Bean first, because it was a book I remember loving as a child and it shows an unlikely friendship between two girls and them growing up together, showing again, that anyone can be friends even the most unlikely pairs. And lastly, I put in my library The Boxcar Children #37 because it is a great mystery book that is entertaining and provides good lessons like working together and problem solving.

McKeown,Ella-ED-LLC 303 - Google Drive

For this assignment, I chose to do a children interview. I think that the best way to learn how to enhance literature for children is to hear it from them first. I spoke to three children in my life, in varying grades and they shared a variety of things about literature. Specifically, they told me their likes and dislikes, as well as where they do the most reading and how they get access to literature. I think that this was a really fun way to hear some insight and to hear how I can make content engaging for young children. https://www.canva.com/design/DAF8C1ORJyE/MqGoLvhmCnm2U3ka2Smstw/edit?utm_content=DAF8C1ORJyE&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton

I chose to create my own Epic library for my Final Inquiry Project. I wanted to start making my own library after using Epic to a great extent for a different class to find books in a certain lexile level range. This will be very valuable to have books already in collections for the future. Epic is a great tool to use to access e-books for free. Epic includes useful tools such as including the lexile levels of books and sorting by grade. There are books on a variety of subjects such as science, math, English language arts, and history. I plan to use these collections for my future classroom. I put the books into categories based on subjects and themes.

Folklore: https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500117/folklore?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Poetry:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500145/poetry?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Historical Fiction:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500166/historical-fiction?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Chunking Out Strategy (reading strategy):

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500182/chunking-out-strategy?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Sounding Out Strategy:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500184/sounding-out-strategy?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Ch Digraph:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500188/ch-digraph?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Sh Digraph:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500191/sh-digraph?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Sports:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500197/sports?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Friendship:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500200/friendship?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

How I Feel:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500204/how-i-feel?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

A New Home:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500211/a-new-home?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Science Fiction:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500213/science-fiction?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

Graphic Novels:

https://www.getepic.com/collection/33500216/graphic-novels?utm_source=t2t&utm_medium=link&utm_campaign=collection&share=58121446165

For the final inquiry I decided to create my own Epic library collection. I thought that creating a collection of different pieces of literature would help me so much in the future. I know that when I have my future classroom I will refer back to the collections I made to incorporate them into lessons. I found different books across subjects so that I can look back when planning and pull those books for particular curriculum. I plan on teaching 2nd grade so I chose to focus most of my collection on second grade. Therefore, I included history, science, animals, read aloud books, and a few diversity books to begin the class year. I plan to add to this library and continue exploring different books and create more collections.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ti5tAlt273oj4UBOzbjCS-BP0NkDfRztl8PZWD8ZVzM/edit?usp=sharing

My library offers a diverse range of books for everyone in the classroom containing books about pets, friendship, facts and more. As a future educator I believe this library will be beneficial to my future classroom for my students to use. I have used Epic before and the futures on the website are perfect to differentiate instruction. Some of the features include read aloud books, vocabulary words and more. The books I selected will be appropriate for grades K-2. These are the grades I want to teach so this will be perfect for my future classroom. The topics on the books will fit everyones needs in the classroom. This was so much fun to do and got me excited for using it in my own classroom.

I chose to create a book review on a book that was already included in my padlet. I decided to do a book review format with Smile by Raina Telgemeier because the graphic novel format for narrative writing and memoirs is not a book I was often introduced to in school and I see many in class activities that can sprout from these genre. This review was a way for me to analyze how this book format, the dialogue, and characters journey shapes how the reader empathizes with the themes. I expanded on how the themes were incorporated in the novel, the illustrations, and included an in class activity on character analysis. Having a graphic format with this novel will allow students to use facial features and expressions to defend their character analysis.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/17fdPS4aF_K73DIKPG0zgD9E70L02T5krfSYsE_9sRto/edit?usp=sharing
