When Bessie was young she would pick cotton and do people's laundry for money. She also started to attend school in Waxahachie at the age of six. When she was eighteen she attended the Colored Agricultural and Normal University(now known as Langston University) for one semester due to financial issues. In 1915, she got hired as a manicurist. Later, she attended the Berlitz Language School to learn French. She attended the Caudron Brothers' School of Aviation in Le Crotoy in France. Here she got her international pilot's license issued by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. She would later do aerobatic shows for money.

Bessie Coleman, like many people of color, had to deal with racial segregation and racial violence. This is why Bessie's father moved. She would fight segregation by refusing/negotiating her performances at shows. When she wanted to become a pilot she had more obstacles. Such as the fact that she was a woman and a person of color. No flight school in the US wanted to give her a chance. To overcome this obstacle she learned French and attended a flight school in France. Here she became a pilot.

Bessie Coleman changed how people view women of color. Showing people that women can achieve anything, such as becoming a pilot. She also inspired lots of people, and she became a role model, after all, she was defying society's norms. She defied these norms by teaching people how to fly, regardless of race or gender. Not only that, she became the first woman of color to get a pilot's license. Even though society tried to stop her from achieving this. This is how she changed society and inspires many today.
