This woman's name was Irena Sendler; she was originally born as Irena Krzyżanowska. Her date of birth was February 15 1910, in Warsaw to Dr. Stanisław Krzyżanowski. She isolated the Jews that was until the Warsaw Ghetto she was working in was erected in 1940. Irena was a woman but not just any woman, a hero. She saved over 1,000 jewish children. After that in 1980, Irena joined the solidarity movement. She lived in Warsaw for the rest of her life. She then died on may 13 2008, she got to the old age 98. Her grave now sits and is buried in Warsaw's Powązki cemetery.

Irena was a proud woman that smuggled Jewish kids out of the Warsaw Ghetto in 1942-1943.
Her incredible bravery saved 2,500 jewish children, most people who fought for them didn't save that much.
In 1927 Irena wanted to learn lots about the law and Polish studies so she went to a Warsaw University.

Because of her story in 2003 she was announced the winner of the Jan Karski award for Valor and the Courage. To be specific the announcement was on January 24 but the award CEREMONY was on October 23 in the state of Washington, D.C. Her story was heard through the Life in a Jar project. And most importantly she saved many lives and I think that's the most important award is to feel like a hero yourself. And I'm sure that's how Irena felt after saving 2,500 Jewish children

When Irena heard about this project in Kansas, in one of her first letters she said, “I was stunned and fascinated; very, very surprised; interested.” She also wrote “My emotion is being shadowed by the fact that no one from the circle of my faithful coworkers, who constantly risked their lives, could live long enough to enjoy all the honors that now are falling upon me…. I can’t find the words to thank you, my dear girls…. Before the day you have written the play “Life in a Jar” — nobody in my own country and in the whole world cared about my person and my work during the war …”- Irena
