Today dumplings exist all over the world in different forms based on the culture in that area. These are mostly savory, but they can be found even in some sweet forms. A dumpling is a dough that has something filled on the inside. These fillings can be broth, vegetables, meats, and sometimes even dessert options.

Some people cut their dumplings when they are eating them, but they are not supposed to be cut. So you run the risk of losing some of that great flavor packed inside. Dumplings are supposed to be made to be eaten in one bite perfectly; that way, you do not need to cut it.

Forks should be avoided when eating dumplings as they can puncture it, releasing flavor and or juices. The utensil commonly used to ear dumplings is chopsticks.

Dumplings are always part of the Chinese meal during the Chinese New Year. This has been a tradition, and families do this because dumplings resemble the ancient shape of ingots. This symbolizes wealth for the new year, and the more dumplings you eat on the Chinese New Year, the wealthier you are going to be that year.

Jiaozi With Sauce

Some dumplings had a gold coin inside, and whoever bites down on the one with the coin was said to have the most luck in the year. This tradition is still around, but you will not typically see gold coins inside anymore as it is considered unsanitary and replaced with sweets like candy or even peanuts.

It is said that dumplings were seen around 1,800 years ago. Back then, dumplings were called Jiaozi. The story behind this is that a man named Zhang Zhongjing was a physician during that time. There was a terrible winter, and people were getting frostbite due to the extreme cold. The place the frostbite was most prominent was around the ears.

To help these people, he made a mixture of lamb, healing/medicinal herbs, and black pepper wrapped inside a form of dough. Then, he made a soup and placed two of these Jiaozis in each bowl. He fed it to the ill people, and their frostbite symptoms seemed to subside.
