The documentary should be 3-5 minutes long and must contain at least one interview, and both diegetic and non-diegetic sound. We encourage you to experiment with filmmaking styles and techniques, but you must use at least one documentary mode and at least two documentary techniques from the table below (the interview counts as one):

Written, audio or video entries to be uploaded to your Padlet. Maximum time for video/ audio: 3 minutes per post. Put under Task 1 section.

Your research will continue through your proposal and planning stage. This task is in two parts. Both must be completed.

1. Carry out relevant research into sound and image and keep a research log to track your work. Research Log Template 

   
   

   • This should have links to and brief information about ALL the research you do. 

   • Do NOT put all the actual research on your Padlet – log it on the research log and discuss it in the findings. 

2. Present your findings from your research activities.  

   
   

   *Explain what you found - here you can refer to your research log. Give specific details of your research e.g. sound techniques such as a voice over in a particular documentary.

   * Explain HOW you researched e.g., emails, online, watching films, interviews etc...

   *Explain WHY the research is useful to you - what did you learn from it?

   *Explain HOW the research has supported or will support your idea and/or project development. (500-1000 word written document or 5-10 min video/audio).

This will include further research identified in your proposal along with pre-production materials such as storyboards, shot lists, interview plans, organisation of equipment, cast/interviewees, props list, location recces and risk assessments, sound map, organisation of sound.

Here's a list of pre-production activities you can carry out: 

• Plan for interview(s) (style of interview, location, interview set-up (lights, sound, camera, shot list etc.) 

• Plan for B Roll (other footage you need to film yourselves - storyboard, shot list) 

• Plan for archive / stock footage (what do you need and where will you get it) 

• Sound map for your documentary (to identify sound needed).

• Plan for how you will source or record audio (ambient sound, voiceover, music tracks, score, SFX). 

• Location List (Location recces, risk assessments) 

• Resources (equipment (hiring or guerrilla?), crew needed) 

• Production Schedule (what you will do and when) 

• Any planning notes of videos/photos of progress

Upload all of your Pre-Production stuff to your Task 3 section of your Padlet. 

Complete a reflection that reflects on the effectiveness of your final documentary with particular reference to your use of sound:  

1. You can either write up your reflection (750-1000 words approx.) or do an audio or video recording (5-7 mins approx.).  You can use these questions to help you. 

2. You should include tutor and audience feedback to back up some of your points. 

3. You should compare the quality of your use of image and sound with professional products you have researched. 

4. You should reflect on your use of modes and techniques.
