Evidence #1- Generally speaking, early nuclear plants were designed for a life of about 30 years, though with refurbishment, some have proved capable of continuing well beyond this. Newer plants are designed for a 40 to 60 year operating life. (world-nuclear.org (linked above))

Evidence #2- As the average age of American reactors approaches 40 years old, experts say there are no technical limits to these units churning out clean and reliable energy for an additional 40 years or longer. (energy.gov)

1. Our coal supply is decreasing more rapidly because we have to increase demand due to the cold winters.

2. 'Clean' coal is not actually as environmentally friendly as it is claimed to be. It still produces more carbon emmisons than nuclear power and more human health impacts. (World Nuclear Association)

According to the American Nuclear Society, as of 2023 76% of Americans favor using nuclear energy and only 24% of Americans oppose using it. This number has continued to increase from 1983 until 2023.

According to Grist.org, "55 percent of U.S. adults support the use of nuclear power. That’s up four percentage points from last year and reflects the highest level of public support for nuclear energy use in electricity since 2012. The survey found that Republicans are more likely to favor nuclear energy than Democrats, consistent with previous Gallup polls."

Evidence 1) Zion Units 1 and 2 were permanently certified as shut down on February 13, 1998- 26 years ago. (nrc.gov)

Evidence 2) The Zion Nuclear Power Plant is on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan, and was in operation from 1973 until 1998- 25 years running. (clui.org)

• according to World Nuclear, globally, about 15 million packages of radioactive material are transported each year on public roads, railways, and ships.

• According to Transporting Radioactive Waste in Virginia, from Virginia, low-level radioactive waste is hauled to Clive, Utah or Andrews, Texas by rail and by truck on the interstate highways. High-level radioactive waste is shipped across Virginia via CSX and Norfolk Southern tracks from Newport News, transporting used fuel assemblies from US Navy aircraft carriers.

Spent nuclear fuel can be recycled to make new fuel and byproducts. More than 90% of its potential energy still remains in the fuel, even after five years of operation in a reactor. The United States does not currently recycle spent nuclear fuel but foreign countries, such as France, do. (Office of Nulcear Energy)

Evidence- "The national regulator is responsible for ensuring the plants are operated safely by the licensee, and that the design is approved. A second important concept is that a regulator’s mission is to protect people and the environment."

Evidence - Nuclear power reactors do not produce air pollution while the are operating, unlike fossil fueled power plants.

Evidence - Deaths from fossil fueled energy is estimated to be more than 613 times higher than the amount caused involved with nuclear power. The amount of deaths are per unit of electricity and from accidents involving the supply of the power plants.

1.) Although radiation exposure is extremely dangerous, low-dose radiation is used for medical purposes and there are many natural sources of radiation that we are all exposed to every day.

2.) Routine radiation doses to patients, medical staff, and industrial radiation workers are below 100 mGy. If these doses are spread out over time, instead of being delivered all at once, their effects tend to be less severe.

According to energy.gov "The heat released by fission is used to create steam that spins a turbine to generate electricity without the harmful byproducts emitted by fossil fuels" meaning not only is steam the only pollutant being produced through nuclear energy, but it's actually beneficial in the process of creating nuclear power. nationalgrid.com backs this up with their statement noting that "Nuclear energy also avoids producing air pollutants that are often associated with burning fossil fuels for energy"

Fact- Nuclear power plants are targets for terrorism

Evidence #2- "The principal attraction of civil nuclear-energy facilities as terrorist targets lies in the potential for creating a release of radioactivity large enough to produce significant casualties and land contamination."

"Political and legal opposition to the project has delayed the licensing, construction, and operation of the proposed Yucca Mountain repository. NWPA authorized DOE to enter into agreements with nuclear utilities and other reactor owners to collect fees to pay for DOE’s disposal of the SNF. However, due to the delay in operation of a permanent repository, the federal government has paid roughly $7.4 billion from the Judgment Fund to nuclear utilities and other reactor owners pursuant to court settlements and final judgments through FY2018,"

E1 - “A thermal explosion cannot occur because our [MIT] reactor is designed to want to shut down on its own as temperature increases (i.e., it has a negative temperature coefficient).”

E2 - “It is impossible for a reactor to explode like a nuclear weapon; these weapons contain very special materials in very particular configurations, neither of which are present in a nuclear reactor.”

According to the Union of the Concerned Scientists "One pound of uranium has as much energy as three million pounds of coal" three million pounds is equivilant to 500 tons which would be ten times more than the statment declared when it said 50 tons.

Additionally according to EuroNuclear, in order to generate 45,000 kWh of electricity it only requires 1 kg of natural uranium where it would require 14,0000 kg of coal.

Meaning that for the same amount of energy 14,000X more coal is required than uranium.

This once again iterates that this statement is a myth.

While the initial construction of the plants is comparable to traditional oil and coal plants, the operation of the plants and production of the nuclear energy is way lower.

Based on world-nuclear.org the cost of nuclear energy is about a third of that for coal-fired plants and a fifth of those for gas cycle plants.

Based on the world nuclear association claims existing plants function well with a high degree of predictability and the operation costs of the factories have low risks of operating cost inflation. This means that nuclear energy is economical longterm and will most likely stay this way, while oil and coal have highly fluctuating prices especially with the political insecurity of contries with oil.

Evidence - Nuclear energy can create radioactive waste, these radioactive wastes don't degrade at a fast pace and can remain radioactive and dangerous for thousands of years. Radiation can make all aspects of the environment contaminated.

Evidence - Radioactive waste is hazardous because it contains or emits radioactive particles, which if not properly managed can be a risk to human health and the environment. epa.gov

Evidence #1:"Military plutonium can blended with uranium oxide to form mixed oxide (MOX) fuel.After LEU or MOX is burned in power reactors, the spent fuel is not suitable for weapons manufacture."

Evidence #2:"DU is not usable for nuclear weapons as it does not contain enough fissile material to sustain a nuclear chain reaction."

Evidence 1: Our bodies do not have sensors or special ways in which they can detect alpha-particles, beta-particles, or gamma rays, which are all components of radioactive waves. Essentially, radioactivity is invisible to us (from link above).

Evidence 2: Some people may argue that some things, like watches or other tools from the 1900s, had radium in them that glowed green. However, the radium in them itself doesn't give off a glow and instead does because it was mixed with a chemical called a phosphor (from link above).

1. The worlds present measured resource of uranium in the cost category, and used in conventional reactors is enough to last for another 90 years. This is a higher level of assured resource than most materials.
