1. In the Harlem Renaissance, African Americans were grappling with being emotionally and spiritually independent, while also being under white dependency and subjugation.
2. The call for equity has been a continuous struggle throughout America's history: Reconstruction, The Harlem Renaissance, the Civil Rights Era, and modern day with the Black Lives Matter Movement.
3. The American Dream has evolved overtime and varies based on the individual you ask. Our dreams are not the same due to fact that we all have differing life experiences.

1. The hook (video) was one of the most gripping elements for me. It was interesting to know that the Harlem Renaissance was the blossoming of creativity that had been suppressed for centuries. And finally, things started opening up.
2.The distinctive grammar, vocabulary, and tone were fascinating for me.
3. How people found a voice via art and how language can be used as a way to empower.

1) The American dream can mean so many different things to different people. It can be the white picket fence or it can be hope for equality and equity in the future.

2) The Harlem Renaissance was a movement that highlighted the struggles and hopes of African Americans by African Americans in various aspects of art for one of the first times in history.

3) The call for equality and equity for African Americans are a continuous struggle that has spanned from the beginning of this country to today. What started in the Harlem Renaissance has continued and changed from the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s to the Black Lives Matter Movement of today.

My main takeaway from the lesson today was the struggle with identity that took place prior to the Harlem Renaissance. African Americans felt out of place and as if their culture/heritage didn't matter. The Renaissance allowed the creation and distribution of cultural art that invoked a sense of belonging for those within the African American community.

The Harlem Renaissance was a cultural revolution in that it gave attention to the struggles that African Americans faced in different forms. It was an expression that the American Dream and the ideals individuals have are not the same for everyone, but in general it should be so that anyone can work towards their own American Dream.

1) The Harlem Renaissance provided African Americans with the opportunity to showcase their voice through art

2) The art that was created during this time period was used to empower African Americans instead of trying to conform to the art that people wanted/was popular at the time

3) Equity was not present in these writings, however the lack of equity presented brings attention to how equity was/still is needed.

The movement during this time called for equity, as African Americans still faced (and face) struggles even after slavery.
