Mineral accretion involves applying a low voltage current to a metallic structure to cause limestone to crystallize on the surface, to which coral planulae can attach and grow. The electric current also speeds post-attachment growth. The voltage is low enough that it can be generated by floating solar panels or from wave motion.

Tire reefs are a great material for artificial reefs due to experiments the show the the decomposition of rubber tires don't release chemical compounds. But studies on tire reefs show that tropical storms break apart tire reefs and wash them onto beaches, destroy natural reefs, and inhibit coral growth. Many areas in Florida and on the coasts of France have begun removing tire reefs.
