This restaurant provides an example of how restaurants use emblematic code-switching to signify themselves as a part of the Italian ethnic group. Emblematic code-switching is the use of language to show group membership and solidarity (Holmes and Wilson, 2017).

According to the United States Census, Spanish is the second most common language spoken at home in the county, with 7.3% of residents speaking Spanish at home. This restaurant provides an example of a restaurant using language and artwork to appear more authentic. Jang and Ha (2015) found that the image a restaurant puts out about itself causes the consumer to evaluate it as authentic or not. This restaurant uses a Spanish language mural to help the customer perceive them as more authentic.

"French Delights Bakery" appeals to French residents and French culture fanatics alike through the use of French words in their menu. The use of authentic language in ethnic restaurants is something that has been studied by various researchers. Choi et al. (2017) found that although for some consumers the use of authentic language can lead to positive attitudes, the use of authentic language that is too difficult to decipher can lead to some customers feeling bothered and irritated. "French Delights Bakery" combats this issue by providing an English translation next to the French Counterparts. For example, "Le Jambon", which translates to "The Ham" in English, is next to a description of the sandwich that describes the content of the sandwich in English.

Although the United States Census Data did not provide specific statistics surrounding Chinese ancestry or language spoken in Brevard County, it did mention that around 15,000 people in Brevard County are of Asian descent. Due to the prevalence of ethnic Chinese restaurants such as "China Inn" in Brevard County, we can infer that a number of the 15,000 members of Asian descent are of Chinese descent. The use of Chinese characters by this restaurant is likely to signify a degree of authenticity to their customers. On the menu, all items were listed in English. This restaurant is using the strategy of avoiding too complex authentic language as outlined by Choi et al. (2017) to reduce the likelihood of negative attitudes by their customers.

Welcome to my Speech Communities and Linguistics Landscapes project :)

My approach to this project was to include various images I found of a variety of different languages used in my community. Through gathering images, I was made aware of a diverse variety of languages used at various restaurants in my community. These restaurants utilize their specific language to convey a sense of authenticity in their cuisine. The languages I found used were Italian, German, Spanish, French, and Chinese.

The data collected by the United States Census on the population of Brevard County will be referenced throughout this collage. A link to this data can be found below.
