Brave New World-UbD

As Brave New World is by far one one of the best books I read in my high school career, I wish to include it in my own curriculum. I especially enjoyed the WebQuest by Dana Huff attached, but I'm not sure how I feel it fits in with 12th Grade (Seniors), maybe 10th? Yet, BNW is a work that I'm not sure I would want to have students forget by the time they graduate.

This is a work that I always wanted to read in high school, as many of my friends enjoyed this work, but my teacher never included it. Again the idea of a webquest appears (Day 2 Assignment), which is something new to me, but it fits the with the 10th grade feel I mentioned in the Brave New World work. The creator also mentions the need for previous satirical examination, which she does in the most previous unit of "A Modest Proposal".

Fahrenheit 451 - Ubd

AH! How could I forget another personal favorite - Fahrenheit 451, though it may be less appealing to students, as what's exciting to teachers is not always so for students (UbD Chapter 1 or 2?). Anyways, the group at Lincoln High School who designed this, and Mr. Gordin at Portland Schools who revised this, have poured a lot of work and effort into this lesson plan. It contains anything a beginning teacher may need, which one can expand upon or shorten as they become familiar with teaching the work.

Oedipus Rex & Antigone - UbD

While I was never a fan of Antigone, I never knew that I had been reading it out of order (as the work is preceded by Oedipus Rex) until I was in Great Books in college. This instructor has combined the two works at the usual 9th and 10th grade level, but has uniquely attributed many ideas that transfer from Antigone to Civil Disobedience. The creator includes sections from "Letter from the Birmingham Jail" and a reading by the Hulk (there's a nerd joke :)) of "Civil Disobedience" by Thoreau - an excellent piece I read in college as well! I applaud Ms. Donovan!

This teacher has included a grammar lesson along with writing onto the umbrella topic of The Great Gatsby. Everyone is always in need of brushing up on Grammer, but high school students preparing for college may need more work than we may think, I know I needed it!
