Broken Promises

“I didn’t feel like celebrating. After all he’d went through, I couldn’t believe Dad had gone back to the booze” -Jeannette
This quote shows the theme of broken promises because of how Rex promised Jeanette he would stop drinking for her birthday, but ends up being an alcoholic again. The broken heart below is basically the same as a broken promise because it signifies betrayal and the loss in trust just like what Rex did to Jeannette.

“I could not imagine what my life would be like- without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had.” -Jeannette
This quote shows how Jeannette forgives her father even with all the chaos and stress he had put on her and the family. Her forgiveness towards him eases her anger and is a way to let her love him. This picture of a father and daughter hugging relates to Jeannette's forgiveness towards her father because she does the same thing even through the struggles he puts her through.

Unconditional Love

"Dad turned into an angry eyed stranger who threw around furniture and threatened to beat up Mom or anyone else who got in his way." -Jeannette
This quote shows Jeannette's unconditional love towards her dad Rex. Rex is an abusive father in a way because he does not parent his children like a good father would. Even through all the things Rex has put Jeannette and the family through because of his mistakes and selfishness, Jeannette will always have a form of love for him and that relates to the theme of unconditional love. The picture below relates to the theme of unconditional love because even if the light dies down, the love will still be there.

Self-sufficiency

"Dad kept telling me that he loved me, that he never would have let me drown, but you can’t cling to the side your whole life, that one lesson every parent needs to teach a child is “If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim.” -Jeannette
This quote is an example of self-sufficiency. As Jeannette grows older and experiences "coming of age", she becomes more self-sufficient with herself and her life. For example, she has a set goal to move to New York to restart her life and go to college. This shows her self-sufficiency as she no longer needs to stick to her parents side and can now make her own life choices. The picture below correlates to Jeannette's independency after she moves to New York alone to start her new life without her parents.

"Why not?" Mom said. "Being homeless is an adventure." -Rosemary
This quote is an example of Jeanette's mom's non-conformity. Her saying being homeless is enjoyable and is an adventure shows her ignorance and refusal to get a better life. Jeannette offers her parents to bring them in for a short while so they don't end up being homeless forever but they chose not to. Jeannette's mom thinks its normal and not a bad thing to be homeless because of the amount of homelessness she sees in New York around her. This shows her non-conformity because she believes homelessness is fine.
The picture below is an example of how Jeannette's mom is the only one who believes homelessness is okay. She has the option to move in with Jeannette but chooses not to because she likes the adventures of being homeless.

Fantasy vs. Reality

I stared at the plans. "Dad," I said. "you'll never build the Glass Castle." -Jeannette
This quote is an example of Fantasy vs. Reality in the book. Building the glass castle was a dream and goal for the Walls family. It was more of a fantasy than anything. Jeannette's realization of the glass castle being only a fantasy comes later as she gets older and comes to age. Her family's situation doesn't allow them to be able to build the glass castle and it just shows her that it was all a fantasy once she has accepted the true reality of her current situation. The picture is an example of the Wall's dream of building the glass castle. It is only a dream but their is a dream too high to be able to be reached by them and they have to accept that one day.
