When Martin Luther King led the civil rights movement in the 1960s, he set precedent for peaceful protest worldwide. Protestors roam the streets today claiming to do as King did. Some succeed. Some do not. When this happens, these so called "social justice warriors" become overwhelmingly passionate and occasionally violent. This does not follow the model created by civil disobedience devotees Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King. If you return to their texts, you can draw conclusions on what exactly they meant in "Civil Disobedience" and "Letter From a Birmingham Jail" and create a simple plan true to its roots. As King said, "We know through painful experience that freedom in never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed" (King, par 13).

Although it may not feel like it, everyone can and will be affected by your actions. Make sure that these actions are those that you would want to be reflected on your community. Some groups have entirely ignored this, using their aforementioned violence to destroy buildings, small businesses, and sometimes hurt others. If you see someone doing something like this, it is your duty to stop them. Their negative presence can sully the good nature of a peaceful protest.

This is okay to start with. Any attempt to change wrongdoing is a good attempt. Every movement started small, including controversial ones such as women's rights and civil rights. However, your focus should be on getting your cause to gain momentum. The goal of peaceful protest is stated as "merely bring[ing] to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive" (King 267). By presenting your argument in a creative way, you can create a strong cause while also gaining attention.

As Thoreau said, "If a plant cannot live according to its nature, it dies; and so a man" (par. 14). This quote speaks of the natural need by humans to adapt their situation to their surroundings. If we do not progress as a culture, we will die. That is why protest is necessary. As a harbinger of change, peacefully voicing injustices is the only way humans can become more tolerant and be happier people.

"The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will is equally liable to be abused and perverted before the people can act through it" (Thoreau, par. 1).

Do not allow fear of the government to stop you from protesting what you believe is right. The system itself can be corrupted by those in power, as Thoreau writes in "Civil Disobedience". Despite the consequences that may be faced, if you have done nothing wrong, keep fighting.

On page 264, King speaks of raising tension to open the door to negotiation. This is a good end goal for a protest. If both sides bring their supporters together and manage to start a mature conversation on the issue at hand, the cause has been relatively successful. Being a bigot doesn't get problems solved. To progress in society, everyone needs to compromise on some issues that would benefit others.
