In this chapter the main character is Ponyboy, a 14 year old. This chapter talks about two gangs, the Socs which is short for socials, and the Greasers. The Socs are the western rich kids while the Greasers have their hair heavily greased and long. The Greasers are also the poorer eastern kids. Ponyboy also has two older brothers, Sodapop, and Darrel who are also part of the Greasers gang. Sodapop is a dropout from highschool and works at as an auto-mechanic, and Darrel, or Darry, works two jobs, one part time and one full time. The rest of the gangs names are Steve Randle, Two-Bit Matthews, and Johnny. Johnny was the youngest of the group, and also the weakest as well, he also always had a nervous look in his eyes. One day Ponyboy was walking home by himself from the movie theatres, when he got jumped by the Socs gang. They got their knife and threatened to kill him. They beat him up until his brother came, the Socs ran and their knife dropped and fell onto his cheek giving him a cut.

The chapter starts of by Pony, and the gang sneaking into a movie theater. At the drive-in there are two girls sitting in the front row in the seats. Dally moves up there and puts his feet up onto her chair. The girl, Cherry who is one of the Socs, gets into a argument with Dally. Cherry starts talking to Ponyboy and asks him his name which he responds with Ponyboy Curtis which he does not answer much. Dallas comes back with sodas and gives one to Cherry which she throws back at him. He then tries to put his arm around her. Johnny steps up, grabs his arm, and says "stop". The girls asks the boys to sit up there with them to protect them from Dally, Dally then storms off. Two-Bit then comes up behind and says "Ok, greasers you've had it", to scare them. Johnny is terrified from that. Two-Bit asks Pony to go get them some popcorn, Cherry also comes with them. Pony explains to Cherry why Johnny is very scared of the Socs. Pony says that Johnny got severyly cut and bruised by the Socs. Two-Bit came over to tell Ponyboy and Cherry that Dally is out slashing tires. Two-Bit offers them a cigarette as a sorry for scaring Johnny getting scared. Pony feels nervous because he does not want to be seen hanging out with Socs girl. Cherry tells him that the Socs have problems as well she says that "Things are rough all over". He wished that he could have those kinds of troubles

The movie was ending and the gang and the two Socials girls were about to go home. Two-Bit offered to take them home in his car once they reached his house. While they were walking to Two-Bit's house, they spotted one of the Socials Mustangs drove by them. Pony started to talk to Cherry about why he didn't like Darry. Two-Bit got very mad over this and slapped him. While they were walking Pony noticed that Cherry sees the same sunset that he sees. This means that the Socials have the same perspective on the world as the Greasers, and that it does not matter if you are rich or poor. The Socs were circling back and they got out of their car. They wanted Cherry and Marcia to not be with the Greasers. Cherry refused because they were drunk and they threatened to hurt the Greasers. So, Johnny got his switch-blade and threw a pop bottle at Ponyboy for him to use. Cherry wasn't a fan of fights so she just gave up and went with them. Pony and Johnny were sitting on the curb now and everybody else left. Pony talked about a dream he had that his parents were still alive and that Sodapop was still riding his horse at his old job, and that his dad still got exited over Darry's grades. It was two a.m now and Ponyboy and Johnny did not know. Because Johnny's parents were always mad and arguing, they didn't care when he comes home. But for Ponyboy it was not the case. He went home and walked in to find Darry sitting down to reading a magazine and Soda sleeping. Darry got really mad and slapped him across his face so hard that he hit the door. He ran out and heard Darry immediately regretting what he just did. He was running to find Johnny. He found Johnny and started running with him far away from his house.

Ponyboy and Johnny were still running and got to a park. At the park there was a fountain and a small pool. The Socs were circling around and coming for them. The five Socs got out of the car and said that Ponyboy "needs a bath". So, they got Ponyboy's head and dunked it in the water until he felt like he was dead. Johnny didn't want Pony to die so he killed Bob. Ponyboy was now conscious and they both went to the place Dally was partying at to get a gun, money, and a plan. They went there because Dally had a gun that he could give to them. Dally gave Ponyboy dry clothes and the gun. Johnny and Pony were getting on to a box car on a train heading to Windrixville. They fell asleep and woke up in Windrixville and started going to the abandoned church that Dally told them to go to. Once they get inside Pony remembers when he convinced the whole gang to go to church on Sundays, until the gang started to goof around and didn't want to go there anymore. Then, they fell asleep on the floor.

It said that he was going out for supplies and that he will be back soon. Johnny came back with a book, food, and games. They have to cut their hair and bleach it so that they don't look like the suspects. Ponyboy said that he will read the book to Johnny . Pony sits by the steps of the church and looks at the view. He says that he could paint a picture if he had the materials and the fresh picture in his mind. They come inside and they start worrying about the murder that Johnny did. They fall asleep and woke up to see Dally. Dally explains to them that Soda and Darry told him to find Pony and Johnny and tell them to turn themselves in. Dally also said that Soda gave them money. Dally wanted to take them to eat with Sodas money. He sped around for a bit on the mountains for fun and then went down to a Dairy Queen store. Pony started chugging a Pepsi down, because he couldn't live without them, and Johnny was eating a banana split. Dally talked about how he carries around a gun now and that he is killing people now. He also talked about a war that is happening between the two gangs. Dally said that the Greasers gang has a spy now who is Cherry Valence.

Dally doesn't want Johnny to do that because he says that he does not want Johnny to become tougher. They drive past the church to get their home and see the church on fire. Johnny and Pony run out of the car because it was their fault. A guy named Jerry explains that there are about eight kids inside the church. Pony and Johnny break a window to get in and save them after they got all the kids out. Pony always wondered what it was like inside a burning ember, now he knew, he said it was hell. Johnny got stuck inside trying to save Pony from dying. Then Dally got stuck inside saving Johnny but then eventually got out. Pony woke up in a ambulance and Jerry was there. He said that Dally and Johnny are in the car behind them. After they got healed Darry and Soda came to the waiting room for them and Ponyboy saw Darry cry for the first time. This was the first time Pony saw Darry cry, and Darry didn't even cry at his parents funeral.

Ponyboy is being interviewed by the reporters and Darry tells them to leave him alone. The doctor says that Johnny might not live, that he has a broken back, and that he is suffering from third degree burns. They get home and Ponyboy wakes up inside the house and goes to make breakfast. Two-bit and Steve walk in the door and show him the newspaper, which shows that Ponyboy, Dally, and Johnny are heroes. However Pony needs to go to jail. Ponyboy reads that he might be sent to a boys home. He does not want to be separated from Soda and Darry because they work so hard to protect him. They also say that Johnny is to be tried for manslaughter. Pony tells him that he has had a recurring nightmare, which he does not really remember. He has had that dream after his parents funeral. Darry and Soda had sent him to a doctor, but all he said was to read more, study more, draw more, and play football more. Darry and Soda leave for work and tells Two-Bit to take care of Pony to do some cleaning before the social workers inspection of their home. Later they go to a store where Pony bought a drink. They saw the blue Mustang follow them with Randy and the Soc who tried to drown Pony. Randy brought Pony into his car and talked about how things were rough all over and that he does not like the fighting between the greasers and the Soc's. Randy and Cherry have a lot in common, they don't like war, and they don't like to fight over things. Pony goes inside and tells Two-bit that Randy is just a guy, and so are the other Soc's

Pony and Two-Bit went to go see Johnny in his hospital bed. Johnny says that he wants hair grease, and a copy of "Gone With the Wind". The nurse comes and tells Johnny that his mom is there. Johnny said to not let her in, because he thinks she will say that it will be better when he dies. Ponyboy walks out of the room because they see that Johnny passes out, and Two-Bit comes in with a copy of gone with the wind. Ponyboy and Two-Bit are walking out of his room and hear Johnny's mom saying that she is allowed to go in the room because she cares about her son. She also blamed the Greasers of hurting him. Two-Bit got angry and left with Ponyboy to go on the bus home. Ponyboy is very mad, and wants to go to the fight between Greasers and the Socs now. Cherry Valance was sitting in her Corvette when they came. She said that Randy said that that its up to the Greasers how they fight except there is no weapons. Cherry was then talking about Bob, her boyfriend. She was talking about how he was sweet and friendly, but when he was drunk it was the part of him that beat up Johnny. She also said that there was something special that made people follow him around, and she also saw the same things in Dallas and that is why she didn't want to fall in love with Dally. Pony starts getting angry and talking to Cherry about how she doesn't care about Soda, Darry, or any of the other Greasers. He turns and walks away then stops and turns around. Pony asks if they can see the sunset on the West Side, which she replies with "Yes". He now knows for sure that Cherry feels the same way he does.

They go to get some help from another Greaser gang that they are friends with. They go to the rumble and find 22 Socs compared to their 20 Greasers. No one starts the fight, so Darry steps up and then Paul, Darry's football friend from high school, steps up to fight. They started to circle around each other, seeing who throws a punch first. Dally then joins the fight, which leads to a big battle between the gangs. He pulled the switch-blade that Two-Bit gave it on the nurse so that he could get out of the hospital. After a long hassle of fighting the Greasers won,and the Socs got in their cars and drove away. When the rumble ended they go to the hospital to tell Johnny about their victory, but they get pulled over by a cop. Ponyboy faked an injury and gets an escort to the hospital. They make it to Johnny's room and while he's is taking his last few breaths of his life, he tells them that "fighting is useless, and he tells Ponyboy to "stay gold". In anger, Dally punches the wall, and quickly runs out of the room.

He says that he has robbed a grocery store and he is running from the police. They run out and find him in the vacant parking lot. He's holding his unloaded gun at the cops, but the cops kill him before he even hits the ground. Pony is saying in his head that Dally is not dead and that Johnny is not dead either.

11
It has been a week since the concussion. Ponyboy is not able to leave his bed now. While he is in his bed he is looking at one of Soda's old yearbooks. He sees the picture of Bob in the book and thinks to himself that, what if Bob's parents hated him, he said that he prefers their hatred to their pity. He looked at the photos and remembered the conversations with Cherry, and Randy. Ponyboy concludes that Bob was cocky, hot-tempered, frightened and human. Randy visits the house and talks to Ponyboy with insensitivity. Pony gives a weed, and Pony starts to smoke, even though he is not supposed to, Randy declines Not knowing what Ponyboy has been through, he says that he is worrying about being associated with the violence. They start talking about having to go to court. Ponyboy, being disturbed, says that he was the one who killed Bob. After Randy kept disagreeing, Pony kept on saying he was the one. Darry sees Ponyboy smoking and gets mad at him while Randy leaves.

12
Pony thought there might be more people at the hearing, but there was only Darry, Soda, Randy and his parents, Cherry and her parents, and the two other Socs who jumped Pony and Johnny. The doctor said something quietly to the judge before the hearing. Instead of asking questions about the incident, the judge asks about where he lives and how good he does at school. The judge clears him of all charges and closes the case. Everything was relieving for everyone else, but not for Pony. He kept on tripping on random objects such as a coffee table. He also started to flunk classes such as his English class, which he had a D in now. The teacher said after class to him that if he writes a really good paper about something really important in his life. At lunch the gang drives over to the store where most of the Greasers eat lunch. Pony is sitting on top of Steve's car. The Socs come up to him confronting him about killing Bob. Pony gets his Pepsi bottle and threatens to hurt them, so they drove away. They ran, and Two-Bit came over and said to be careful and don't become tough. When he comes home he doesn't know what to write about. Soon, Soda comes home asking if any mail came. He sat down on the couch looking very depressed. Pony doesn't bother with Soda, even though they look out for each other. Usually at dinner Darry and Pony are in a argument after dinner, this time is was about the paper he needs to write. Pony brought up Soda not going to school, and Soda says "Don't… Oh, you guys, why can't you…", and runs away. Pony reads that Soda got wanted to marry Sandy but she moved to Florida, so he couldn't. Pony and Darry catch up to him and tell him that they will stick together no matter what. When Pony gets home he opens Gone with the Wind, and finds a note that Johnny left before he died. The note read that he was happy to die for those little kids because they had more to live for. This means a lot because he wasn't loved by his parents, so he thought that the kids might have an opportunity to change their lives. He also explains in the letter that he understand the poem that Pony said in the church. It showed the innocence of a child. Pony then knew what to write about, he would write about the life he lives. (He wrote The Outsiders).
