Children's Mercy by Theodore Boesen

Children’s Mercy is a hospital for children under the age of 21. In the 20th century 2 girls had an idea to make a children’s hospital. It was hard to start the hospital because not all the medicine could be used for kids, meaning they had to figure out ways so children could get treated properly. In 1915 $375,000 was raised to construct Children’s Mercy Hospital on land donated at 1710 Independence Avenue. What started with only 1 location turned into 40 locations all around America.

On March 12 we are having a dollar where people can bring a dollar to make happy kits .The plan is to get supplies to make happy kits which is a kit full of fun stuff for the patients to do when they are in the hospital. We will also be hosting a lemonade stand at Arno park on April 1 to make even more money for happy kits. When we have raised all the money we will go to Dollar Tree and buy the stuff to make them. After we are done making the kits we will drop them off at Children’s Mercy so people can use them.

Finally with the help of the public they can treat all comers. In 1915 $375,000 was donated to build Children’s Mercy on 1710 Independence Ave. Children’s Mercy was finally open November 27, 1910. That’s how Alice Berry Graham and Katharine Berry Richardson started an institution that is now called:Children’s Mercy.

Dr. Alice Berry Graham and her sister, Dr. Katharine Berry Richardson, opened The Free Bed Fund Association for Crippled, Deformed and Ruptured Children with one bed in a women’s hospital at 15th Street and Cleveland Avenue. Dr. Alice Berry Graham, who her sister credited as the founder of Children’s Mercy, dies. In 1958 Children's Mercy made an area for non-medical reasons.
