The tree Melinda sketches in art symbolizes what she has been through. She draws trees that have been struck by lightning(Chapter 6),which means that she feels like her life is not important anymore because she got raped. It matters to the example because Melinda feels like she has no control over her body.

The unused janitor closet is a place where Melinda goes to isolate herself from anybody, she feels extremely unsafe at school because of what happened in the summer. The symbol matters because Melinda feels comfortable and secure in her closet but not outside it. She says “It is getting harder to talk. My throat is always sore, my lips are raw”(Chapter 2). This quote symbolizes how she wants to be silent and not speak because of the occurring events.

This quote matters because Melinda really hates herself for not taking action at the summer rape.

The lips in speak symbolize how Melinda wants to keep quiet and not talk because she feels like nothing, since Andy Evans has violated her body.
Melinda basically chews her lips so she can not talk. An example is “The salt in my tears feels good when it stings my lips” (Anderson Chapter 21). This quote matters to the symbol because Melinda feels ugly and she hates her appearance as well as her lips so she’s trying to hurt herself by stinging her lips with tears.
